Instax Mini vs Wide (and Square): Which Film Size Should You Buy?

The short answer

Instax Mini makes a credit-card-size print with a 62 x 46 mm image for about $0.91 a shot, while Instax Wide prints a 62 x 99 mm image, about 2.15 times the area, for about $1.20 a shot (US twin-pack prices checked October 28, 2026).

Pick Mini for cheap, pocketable everyday shooting with the most cameras and film designs, and pick Wide for groups, landscapes and events where a bigger print matters. Instax Square sits in between, with a 62 x 62 mm image at about $1.15 a shot.

Pick the Instax Mini if

  • You shoot often. Mini is the cheapest Instax film: about $0.91 a shot in a twin pack, or about $0.83 in a 60-shot value pack.
  • You want a camera for a jacket pocket or small bag. The Mini 12 weighs 306 g, about half the Wide 400's 616 g.
  • You take selfies and close-ups. The Mini 12 has a selfie mirror and a close-up mode for 30 to 50 cm.
  • You like frame designs, journaling, scrapbooks, or prints that fit a wallet or guest book.

Pick the Instax Wide if

  • You shoot groups, landscapes or events, where a 99 mm wide frame gives everyone room.
  • You want prints big enough to frame or pin up on their own.
  • You don't mind carrying a 616 g camera and paying about $1.20 a shot.
  • You want a tripod socket, a 4 to 10 second self-timer and an included angle stand for group shots (Wide 400).

Instax film sizes: how big are Mini, Square and Wide photos?

Instax comes in three film sizes, and all three share the same 62 mm image height. Only the width changes. Per Fujifilm's specs, a Mini image is 62 x 46 mm, a Square image is 62 x 62 mm and a Wide image is 62 x 99 mm, or roughly 2.4 x 1.8, 2.4 x 2.4 and 2.4 x 3.9 inches.

By image area, Wide (6,138 sq mm) is about 2.15 times Mini (2,852 sq mm), and Square (3,844 sq mm) is about 1.35 times Mini. Fujifilm describes Wide as twice as large as Mini, which matches the sheet itself: 86 x 108 mm against 86 x 54 mm.

Instax launched with Mini film in November 1998, and Fujifilm still pitches Mini as credit-card sized. Wide followed in 1999 and Square in 2017, according to Wikipedia's Instax history.

Sources round the sheet sizes differently. Digital Camera World and T3 list Mini as 85 x 54 mm, while Fujifilm lists all three formats at 86 mm tall. The table below uses Fujifilm's numbers.

If you are also weighing Polaroid, a Polaroid 600 or i-Type image has slightly more area than Instax Wide (6,241 vs 6,138 sq mm, per Digital Camera World), but it is nearly square rather than wide. Our Polaroid vs Instax comparison and Polaroid film guide cover that choice.

How much does Instax Mini, Square and Wide film cost per shot?

Mini is the cheapest Instax film to shoot. At Glazer's Camera in Seattle on October 28, 2026, a 20-shot twin pack cost $18.17 for Mini, $22.99 for Square and $23.99 for Wide: about $0.91, $1.15 and $1.20 a shot. Reformed Film Lab in Michigan was nearly identical at $18.00, $23.00 and $24.00.

That puts Wide about 32 to 33 percent above Mini per shot at both stores. Pixinstant puts the gap at about 21 percent, so it depends on where and when you buy. At 200 shots a year, film alone runs roughly $182 for Mini, $230 for Square and $240 for Wide.

Bulk packs help Mini most. Glazer's 60-shot Mini value pack ($49.99) works out to about $0.83 a shot, and its 40-shot Square value pack ($44.99) to about $1.12. No Wide value pack turned up at Glazer's.

Shop around for Wide. On the same day, 20 Wide shots ranged from $19.99 at Arts Cameras (sold out) to $35.99 at AVC Store in Miami, and Wide film was sold out at three of the five stores checked.

Unique Photo's buying guide puts it this way: a camera may last years, but film is what you keep buying, so the format you pick affects long-term cost far more than the camera's price.

Instax Mini 12 vs Wide 400 (and Square 2): how the cameras differ

Picking a film also picks your camera, and the three cameras differ a lot in size and features. Fujifilm's spec sheets put the Mini 12 at 306 g on two AA batteries, the Square 2 at 450 g and the Wide 400 at 616 g, the last two on four AA each. At 162 x 98 x 123 mm, the Wide 400 rides in a bag, not a pocket.

The Mini 12 and Square 2 are built for selfies and close-ups: both have a selfie mirror and focus from 30 cm. The Wide 400 has no mirror and focuses from 0.9 m, or 40 to 50 cm with the close-up lens in the box. In return it adds a tripod socket, a self-timer you can set from 4 to 10 seconds and an included angle accessory that props the camera up for group shots. TechRadar's Tim Coleman wrote that holding it at arm's length was enough for a selfie, though he summed up its bulk this way: "you are holding a printer with a lens on it."

All three set exposure automatically. Fujifilm lists a flash that fires on every shot for the Mini 12 and Square 2, plus slow sync for low light that holds the shutter open as long as 1/2 second. The Wide 400's spec sheet calls its flash automatic and lists no slow sync, and its slowest speed is 1/64 second, so on paper it picks up less of a dim background. Pixinstant credits the Wide 400 with a lighten/darken control, but Fujifilm's spec sheet lists automatic exposure only.

On October 28, 2026, the Mini 12 listed at $93.95 (sold out at Glazer's and Arts Cameras), the Square 2 at $119.95 (sold out at Arts Cameras) and the Wide 400 at $175.95 at Glazer's and Unique Photo, or $185 at Reformed Film Lab. TechRadar reported that the Wide 400 launched at $149.99 in June 2024 as the replacement for the 10-year-old Wide 300.

Other Mini cameras change the experience, not the print. Unique Photo pitches the Instax Mini 41 ($116.95) as the more style-conscious option, and the Instax Mini Evo is a hybrid that lets you choose which shots to print. Wide has its own hybrid, the Wide Evo, with a 3.5-inch screen and about 100 prints per charge. For more models across brands, see our best instant cameras guide.

Does Instax Wide look better than Mini?

Not inch for inch. Fujifilm says Mini, Square and Wide share the same film technology, and its camera spec sheets rate all three films at ISO 800. Shoot It With Film, which compared all three color films, found they look very similar apart from size. Wide's advantage is room: more people and more scenery in one frame.

Sharpness claims vary. Instant Photo Chicago, an event photo company, calls Mini the sharpest Instax film, and Wikipedia lists Mini at 12 lines/mm against 10 lines/mm for Wide and Square. Shoot It With Film says the only difference it saw besides size was clarity, and that came down to the camera or printer used.

Fujifilm US sells monochrome film in all three sizes. Shoot It With Film singles out black-and-white Wide film shot with flash for its extra contrast.

Instax Square vs Mini: where Square fits

Square is the middle size. Its 62 x 62 mm image is a true 1:1 square with about 35 percent more area than Mini, and Wide still has about 1.6 times the area of Square. Square film costs about $1.15 a shot in a twin pack, close to Wide's $1.20, so you pay nearly Wide prices for an in-between print.

The draw is the shape. TechRadar's Tim Coleman prefers Square because it balances size and intimacy and the prints are easy to display in groups, and Unique Photo says square framing suits portraits, tabletop scenes and architecture.

The newest Square camera is the Square 2, whose Fujifilm site launched on October 14, 2026. Arts Cameras listed it at $119.95 but was sold out on October 28. It has a selfie mirror, a 30 cm close-up mode and four AA batteries that Fujifilm rates for about 30 packs. Fujifilm US also lists the SQ40. Unique Photo still listed the older SQ1 at $189.95, more than the Square 2 costs at Arts Cameras, so compare prices before buying an older model.

Fujifilm US lists six Square film products, including soft haze, sunset, rainbow, black border and monochrome, against 16 for Mini and four for Wide.

Which is better for parties, weddings and photo walls?

It depends on whether you hand out lots of prints or shoot groups. Instant Photo Chicago, an event instant-photo company, says Mini is its most popular format for weddings and corporate events because the prints develop quickly, suit high-volume events and slip into a pocket, wallet or guest book. It recommends Wide for group photos, where a Mini frame squeezes people together.

TechRadar calls the Wide 400 a logical choice for events and expects it to be popular with wedding guests. Its self-timer, angle accessory and tripod socket help when the photographer wants to be in the group.

For display, Pixinstant suggests Mini for scrapbooks and photo walls and Wide for prints framed or pinned to a wall, and TechRadar notes that Square prints are easy to display in groups. If you give Wide prints away in sleeves, Shoot It With Film says 4x6 cello bags are a little too small and 5x5 bags fit.

For outdoor events, Fujifilm rates Mini, Square and Wide film for 5 to 40 C (41 to 104 F), and prints take about 90 seconds to appear. Fujifilm says to hold the print steady rather than shake it. Flying to the event? Check whether instant film can go through airport X-ray.

Which cameras and printers take each Instax film?

Each film fits only cameras and printers of the same format. Mini, Square and Wide cartridges are different sizes and are not interchangeable, so buy the film that matches the name on your camera or printer.

If your photos are already on your phone, a printer can stand in for a camera and lets you print only the keepers. Unique Photo listed the Mini Link 3 at $116.95, the Square Link at $163.95 and the Link Wide 2 at $179.95 on October 28, 2026. Older guides, including T3's 2021 explainer, say there is no Wide printer, which is out of date.

Questions people ask

Is Instax Wide twice the size of Mini?

By sheet size, yes. Wide film measures 86 x 108 mm and Mini 86 x 54 mm, and Fujifilm calls Wide twice as large. The image area is a bit more than double, about 2.15 times (6,138 vs 2,852 sq mm), because Wide prints a 62 x 99 mm image against Mini's 62 x 46 mm.

Sources: houseofphotography-th.fujifilm.com, houseofphotography-th.fujifilm.com, instax.com, digitalcameraworld.com

Can I use Instax Mini film in a Wide camera?

No. Mini, Square and Wide cartridges are different sizes, and each camera or printer takes only its own format. Check the format in the camera's name, such as Mini 12, Square 2 or Wide 400, and buy the film with the same name.

Sources: instaxus.com, pixinstant.com

Is Instax Square bigger than Mini?

Yes. Square's image is 62 x 62 mm against 62 x 46 mm for Mini, about 35 percent more area, on an 86 x 72 mm sheet. It is still smaller than Wide, whose image is 62 x 99 mm.

Sources: houseofphotography-th.fujifilm.com, houseofphotography-th.fujifilm.com, digitalcameraworld.com

Is Instax Wide the same size as a Polaroid?

Close in area, not in shape. Digital Camera World puts a Polaroid 600 or i-Type image at 6,241 sq mm against 6,138 sq mm for Instax Wide, so Polaroid has slightly more area, but its frame is nearly square while Wide is a long rectangle. Our [Polaroid vs Instax](/instant/polaroid-vs-instax/) comparison goes further.

Sources: digitalcameraworld.com

How many photos come in a pack of Instax film?

Ten. Every Instax pack, whether Mini, Square or Wide, holds 10 sheets, and twin packs hold 20. Glazer's Camera also sells a 60-shot Mini value pack and a 40-shot Square value pack.

Sources: houseofphotography-th.fujifilm.com, glazerscamera.com, glazerscamera.com

How long do Instax photos take to develop?

About 90 seconds for all three formats, a little more or less depending on the temperature. Fujifilm says to hold the print steady while it develops instead of shaking it.

Sources: instaxus.com, instax.com, instax.com

Does Instax film work in the cold?

Fujifilm rates Mini, Square and Wide film for use from 5 to 40 C (41 to 104 F), so a day below freezing is outside its range. Fujifilm's camera spec sheets also note that the 90-second develop time varies with the temperature.

Can you take selfies with the Instax Wide 400?

Yes, but it has no selfie mirror and weighs 616 g before batteries. TechRadar's Tim Coleman wrote that holding it at arm's length was enough. If selfies matter most, the Mini 12 and Square 2 both have mirrors and close-up modes from 30 cm.
