Instax Mini 12 Flashing Orange Light: What It Means and How to Fix It
The short answer
An Instax Mini 12 flashing orange light is the flash charging lamp telling you what is wrong: slow flashing means the flash is charging (7 seconds or less with new batteries), a repeating mix of slow and quick flashes means the batteries are low, and quick flashing alone means an error such as a film jam or the lens ring in the wrong position.
The fix Instax says works for most people is a fresh pair of AA alkaline batteries swapped in while the camera is switched on, the same power-on battery swap Fujifilm's manual gives as its reset.

What the Instax Mini 12 flashing orange light means
The Mini 12 has one status light: the flash charging lamp on the front of the camera. Instax and retailers call it orange and at least one YouTube tutorial calls it red, but it is the same lamp with the same codes. Fujifilm's user's guide lists five states, and the blink pattern tells you which fix you need.
Watch it for a few cycles before you change anything. A blink right after you switch on, or right after each shot, is normal: the flash is recharging, and Instax says you can ignore it.
| Light pattern | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Lit, steady | Ready to take a photo | Nothing, go ahead and shoot |
| Off | Camera is off (it also powers off by itself after about 5 minutes) | Turn the lens ring to ON |
| Slow flashing | The flash is charging | Wait until the lamp stays lit, 7 seconds or less with new batteries |
| Slow flashing and quick flashing, repeating | Battery voltage is low | Fit two new AA alkaline batteries (Fix 1) |
| Quick flashing | An error: the film is jammed, the lens ring is in the wrong position, or another error | Check the lens ring, then the film, then reset (Fixes 2 to 4) |
The shutter button will not press while the flash is charging, so a camera that seems frozen for a few seconds after you switch it on is usually just charging.

Fix 1: Slow and quick flashes mean low batteries
Fujifilm's manual is direct about this pattern: the battery voltage is low, and the solution is new alkaline batteries. Instax's own troubleshooting guide says a fresh set, swapped with the camera on, stops the blinking for most people.
- 1
Get the right batteries
The Mini 12 takes two AA alkaline batteries (LR6). Fujifilm says manganese batteries cannot be used, and Instax says alkaline, not rechargeables. A Duracell Coppertop AA 8-pack was $12.99 at Quill on October 28, 2026, about $3.25 a pair.
- 2
Switch the camera on
Turn the lens ring to ON so the lens barrel is out. Instax US says to reinsert the batteries with the lens in the open position.
- 3
Swap both batteries with the power on
Open the battery lid, take both cells out and fit the new pair, matching the plus and minus marks. Instax says doing this with the camera on helps it clear the error and re-detect the new batteries.
- 4
Check the lamp
It should blink while the flash charges, then stay lit. Fujifilm rates a set of new alkalines for about 10 packs of 10 shots, depending on use.

Why is my Instax Mini 12 blinking orange with new batteries?
When new batteries do not stop the light, check how they went in before you blame the camera. Run through these first.
- Swapped with the camera off. An iFixit contributor quotes older Instax manuals saying that if you change batteries with the lens retracted, the lamps blink even with new batteries. Redo the swap with the lens out at ON.
- Wrong type. Rechargeable cells and manganese (zinc-carbon) cells are out, per Instax and Fujifilm. Fujifilm's spec lists only AA alkaline and does not mention lithium AAs, even though GigaParts sells Energizer lithium AAs as a Mini 12 add-on.
- One cell backwards. Instax UK lists batteries placed incorrectly as a cause of the orange flashing light.
- A weak brand. Fujifilm notes that alkaline battery performance varies by brand, so try a different pack.
- A cold camera. Instax US rates its cameras for 41°F to 104°F. If you were shooting below 41°F, let the camera warm up indoors before you troubleshoot further.
- It is not a battery problem. If the lamp is quick flashing only, the manual points to a film jam, the lens ring or another error. Go to Fixes 2 to 4.
Some guides, including SlashGear and AVC Store (both written for the Mini 11) and DiscoverCameras, tell you to turn the camera off before changing batteries, but Fujifilm's Mini 12 manual and Instax's US and UK help pages say to do it with the power on.

Fix 2: Quick flashing from the lens ring
An incorrect lens ring position is one of the three causes of quick flashing in Fujifilm's manual, and the fix is to set the ring in the proper position. It takes seconds to check, so rule it out before you touch the film.
- 1
Turn the ring all the way
Rotate the lens ring firmly to ON until the lens barrel is fully extended. Instax says the camera won't work until the lens is fully out.
- 2
Or set it clearly to CLOSE-UP
For selfies and close-ups, turn the ring to the CLOSE-UP position; the manual says the barrel pops out automatically. Either way, the ring should sit clearly at one marked position.
- 3
Restart if it keeps flashing
Turn the ring to OFF, then back to ON. If the quick flashing continues and no print is stuck, go to the reset in Fix 4.

Fix 3: Quick flashing from a film jam
If a print is stuck in the slot or the camera stopped partway through ejecting one, Fujifilm's instructions are short: do not pull the film out, and replace the batteries.
- 1
Leave the print alone
Do not pull the film out. Instax warns that forcing a print out by hand can jam the rollers.
- 2
Keep the back closed
Opening the back cover exposes the rest of the pack, turning it white and unusable, and it resets the film counter.
- 3
Fit new alkaline batteries
Remove the batteries and insert a new alkaline pair. Fujifilm says the camera may then be able to eject the film.
- 4
Check the pack before the next shot
Instax says the pack must sit with the yellow marks lined up, the door shut and at least one shot left on the counter. The counter counts down from 10 and shows 0 when the pack is finished.
- 5
Don't judge by the first frame
On an older Mini 8, an iFixit owner who pulled out a stuck pack (which costs film) and then fitted new batteries said the first picture afterward was a dud and the next came out fine.

Fix 4: How to reset an Instax Mini 12
For the 'other error' case, Fujifilm says the camera may be malfunctioning and tells you to remove and reinsert the batteries while the power is on. That is the official reset. The Mini 12 manual describes no reset button.
- 1
Turn the camera on
Rotate the lens ring to ON so the lens is out.
- 2
Pull the batteries with the power on
Open the battery lid and take both AA batteries out while the camera is still switched on.
- 3
Put them back
Reinsert them, or a fresh alkaline pair if they are old, with the plus and minus ends matched. The lamp should blink while the flash charges, then stay lit.
- 4
Skip the pin-reset tip
AVC Store describes pressing a reset button under the film tray with a pin on the Mini 11. Fujifilm's Mini 12 manual does not mention one, and opening the back with film loaded ruins the rest of the pack.

Instax Mini 12 not working? Other problems and fixes
Not every Mini 12 problem shows up as a flashing light. These are the other common ones, with the cause Fujifilm or Instax gives where there is one.
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No light at all | Dead or reversed batteries, or the lens is not fully out | Fresh AA alkalines with plus and minus matched, then turn the lens ring fully to ON |
| Camera turned itself off | Auto power off after about 5 minutes | Switch it back on with the lens ring |
| Shutter button will not press | The flash is still charging | Wait for the lamp to stay lit |
| Black print | The lens did not extend fully, so the shutter never opened | Turn the ring fully to ON; if the next print is also black, Instax says the film may be faulty |
| White prints | Light hit the film because the back was opened with film inside | Fujifilm says the rest of that pack is no longer usable, so load a new one |
| Counter shows S | An iFixit user says S means start: the black film cover has not come out yet | Take the first shot; per that answer, it ejects the cover |
| Print stuck halfway out | Film jam | Do not pull it; fit new alkaline batteries (Fix 3) |

Still flashing? Warranty, repair or replacement in the US
If the light still flashes after a lens ring check, a reset and fresh alkalines fitted with the power on, the camera is the likely problem. Instax's own guide says flashing that survives fresh batteries points at the camera itself rather than the power. In the US, call the Fujifilm North America Contact Center at 1-800-800-3854.
The warranty text GigaParts publishes for the Mini 12 gives one year of limited coverage from the date of purchase when you buy from an authorized Fujifilm dealer in the US, so keep your receipt handy. Out of warranty, Fujifilm says it emails a repair estimate before doing any work.
Instax UK takes a harder line: it says an orange flash that persists after battery fixes is an internal board issue and the camera has to be replaced. Fujifilm's US repair page does not say that, so ask for the estimate before you decide.
For scale, GigaParts listed a new Mini 12 at $79.95 on October 28, 2026, after a $14 instant rebate off $93.95 that runs through November 30, 2026. If you end up replacing it, our Instax Mini 12 review, the Instax Mini 41 review and our best instant cameras guide cover the options.

Questions people ask
What does the flashing orange light on my Instax Mini 40 mean?
The Mini 40 follows the same logic. Its manual says flash charging normally takes 3 to 10 seconds and that quick flashing means an error. One error it lists is a failed battery check, where the voltage is too low to charge the flash, and the fix is new batteries.
Sources: manualsnet.com
How do I reset my Instax Mini 12?
Turn the camera on with the lens ring, then remove both AA batteries while the power is on and put them back in. That is Fujifilm's official reset for the Mini 12, and its manual describes no reset button.
Sources: instax.com, manualsnet.com
How do I reset my Polaroid camera?
Polaroid's manual for the Polaroid Now describes no reset button. Its troubleshooting starts with charge: the battery LED blinks red when the camera does not have enough charge to operate, so recharge it and try again. For how Polaroid and Instax cameras differ, see our [Polaroid vs Instax](/instant/polaroid-vs-instax/) guide.

Why is my Instax Mini 12 blinking orange with a new battery?
Usually the batteries went in with the camera off, one is backwards, or they are rechargeable or manganese instead of alkaline. Redo the swap with the lens out at ON. If fresh alkalines fitted that way do not stop it, Instax says the problem is the camera itself.
Sources: instax.co.uk, instax.co.uk
Is the Instax Mini 12 red light the same as the orange light?
Yes. The Mini 12 has a single flash charging lamp on the front, which Instax and retailers call orange and at least one YouTube tutorial calls red, so the codes and fixes on this page apply either way. A blinking red battery LED is a Polaroid Now signal, and it means low charge.

Can I use rechargeable or lithium batteries in the Instax Mini 12?
Fujifilm specifies two AA alkaline batteries (LR6) and says manganese batteries cannot be used, and Instax's troubleshooting guide says alkaline, not rechargeables. Fujifilm does not mention lithium AAs. One blog, DiscoverCameras, suggests NiMH rechargeables, which conflicts with that official advice.

How many photos do Instax Mini 12 batteries last?
About 10 packs of 10 shots, so roughly 100 photos, per set of new AA alkaline batteries, according to Fujifilm. Real life depends on how you use the camera, and Fujifilm notes that alkaline performance varies by brand.

What does S mean on the Instax Mini 12 film counter?
An answer on iFixit says S stands for start: it shows after you load a new pack, and the first shot ejects the black film cover. After that, Fujifilm's manual says the counter counts down from 10 and shows 0 when the pack is finished. Other iFixit users say S also comes back if you open the back, and one blog claims S refers to a shutter setting instead.
