Canon G7X Alternatives: 8 Cameras to Buy Instead in 2026
The short answer
The closest Canon G7X alternative you can actually buy right now is the Sony ZV-1 II: a 1-inch sensor like the G7X, an articulating touchscreen and $998 at Pictureline in October 2026, while the G7 X Mark III, priced at $929.99, sits out of stock at US dealers.
On a smaller budget the Sony ZV-1F costs $598; for photos with a longer zoom, a viewfinder and a built-in flash, look at the Sony RX100 VII (on order at Pictureline for $1,498); and for the flash-on digicam look, The Phoblographer found many early-2000s CCD cameras under $50 in April 2025.

The 8 best Canon G7X alternatives in 2026
Camera Dojo has not tested these cameras. The list comes from where the G7X alternatives guides and reviews overlap (Digital Camera World's reviews and best-compact list, Layers of Beauty, Photoco and Georges Cameras), checked against spec pages from US dealers. No US owner forum thread was readable, so the picks lean on editorial reviewers rather than owner reports. Prices are from Pictureline, Camera West, DJI's US store and eBay, checked October 28, 2026.

Sony ZV-1 II
Closest new rival you can buy today, for vlogging
$998 to $999.99 new (Oct. 2026)
Layers of Beauty calls it the closest true G7 X Mark III rival, and Photoco puts it first on its list of alternatives. Digital Camera World says it shares its 1-inch sensor, video and battery life with the original ZV-1, a camera DCW says beats the G7X for screen articulation, autofocus and audio. Unlike the G7X, it was in stock at Pictureline and Camera West in October 2026, though a Japanese sales chart marked it out of production in August 2026.
Watch out: It has no built-in flash, and its 18-50mm f/1.8-4 lens stops at half the G7X's 100mm reach; Digital Camera World rates the original ZV-1's 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 as the better zoom.

Sony ZV-1F
Vlogging on a budget
$598 new (Oct. 2026)
Layers of Beauty rates it the best G7X dupe overall for creators: a 1-inch sensor, a wide 20mm lens and a side-articulating touchscreen made for framing selfies. It was $598 and in stock at Pictureline in October 2026, against $929.99 for an out-of-stock G7 X Mark III at the same store.
Watch out: There is no optical zoom (only 4x digital) and no built-in flash, so you give up both the longer focal lengths that flatter faces and the G7X's direct-flash look.

- 03
Sony RX100 VII
Photos: a longer zoom, a viewfinder and a flash
$1,498 new, on order (Oct. 2026)
It came out the same year as the G7 X Mark III and, as Digital Camera World notes, has a longer lens and still has a flash. Its 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5 zoom reaches twice as far as the G7X's 100mm on a 20MP 1-inch sensor, and a pop-up EVF helps in bright sun, something the G7X does without. Photoco and Georges Cameras both list it as a G7X alternative.
Watch out: The aperture is not as bright as the G7X's f/1.8-2.8, and at $1,498 (on order at Pictureline) it costs about what used G7 X Mark IIIs sell for, per Digital Camera World.

Canon PowerShot V1
Canon shooters who mostly film
$1,029 new (Oct. 2026)
Its 1.4-inch 22.3MP sensor is larger than the G7X's 1-inch, and its 16-50mm f/2.8-4.5 lens starts much wider (16mm against 24mm). Digital Camera World says it complements the G7 X rather than replacing it, sitting closer to a Sony ZV-style vlogging camera. Camera West had it in stock for $1,029 in October 2026; it launched at $899.99.
Watch out: There is no built-in flash or viewfinder (a multi-function shoe takes some Canon flashes, or standard flashes with an adapter), and DCW notes the zoom makes noise and 4K 60p is cropped.

Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II (used)
The same zoom and bright aperture in an older Canon
$665 used on eBay's product page (Oct. 2026)
The Mark II has a 1-inch sensor and the same 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens as the Mark III, carried over from the original 2014 G7 X. The Mark III added 4K video and swapped micro USB for USB-C, so video is where the Mark II falls behind.
Watch out: Video tops out at Full HD, and used prices have climbed: eBay's product page showed a $665 used price on October 28, 2026, and MPB says a Mark II can sell for up to $880.

Canon PowerShot SX740 HS
Travel zoom for less
$549.99, out of stock at Pictureline; eBay's product page shows $694.95 new or $399.99 used (Oct. 2026)
The No. 1 compact on Yodobashi's Japanese sales chart in early August 2026 packs a 40x zoom (24-960mm equivalent), a pop-up flash, a flip-up selfie screen and 4K video. Digital Camera World recommends it as a travel camera with 'all the zoom you could ever want'.
Watch out: Its 1/2.3-inch sensor is much smaller than the G7X's 1-inch, and Digital Camera World lists image quality as not brilliant, with no raw, touchscreen or EVF.

Leica D-Lux 8
Better low-light photos and real background blur, with a zoom
$1,915 new (Oct. 2026)
Digital Camera World's Hillary Grigonis wrote in March 2025 that this is the camera she would buy instead of a G7X: its Micro Four Thirds sensor is much larger than a 1-inch, which she says means more background blur in portraits and better results in low light. It has a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 zoom, an OLED viewfinder and, per Camera West, an on-camera flash in the box.
Watch out: At $1,915 it costs about twice the G7X's $929.99 dealer price, and DCW flags its 17MP resolution as low next to rivals and its video as dated.

A vintage CCD digicam (PowerShot, Cyber-shot or Coolpix)
The flash-on Y2K look for under $50
Many under $50 (The Phoblographer, April 2025)
The direct-flash look is part of the G7X's appeal, and early-2000s CCD cameras are valued for their distinct color. The Phoblographer found many selling for under $50 in April 2025, including the Nikon Coolpix 995 (2001) and Sony's 7.2MP Cyber-shot DSC-P150; our best vintage digicams guide covers which models to hunt for.
Watch out: They are slow, and sought-after advanced models are no longer cheap: MPB's trade-in price for a 2007 Canon PowerShot G9 rose from up to $45 to as much as $225 in three years.

Canon G7X alternatives compared: sensor, lens, flash and price
The G7 X Mark III's draw is a mix few cameras copy: a 1-inch sensor, a bright 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom and a built-in xenon flash in a 304 g body. Digital Camera World puts it simply: the camera 'still has a unique blend of sensor, lens and flash'.
Every camera in the table gives up at least one of those three. The table shows what each one trades, with the G7X on top for reference.
| Camera | Sensor | Lens (35mm equiv.) | Built-in flash | US price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canon G7 X Mark III | 1-inch, 20.1MP | 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 | Yes, xenon | $929 to $929.99, out of stock |

Which Canon G7X alternative is best for vlogging?
For video, the Sony ZV-1 line is the usual answer. Digital Camera World's ZV-1 review names the G7 X Mark III as its nearest rival and says the Sony beats it for screen articulation, autofocus and audio. The G7X uses 31-point contrast-detect autofocus, and Wikipedia notes reviews were mixed on its focusing, especially up close.
Which ZV-1 to buy is where sources split. Layers of Beauty calls the newer ZV-1 II the closest rival and Photoco ranks it first, while Digital Camera World prefers the original ZV-1's 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens over the ZV-1 II's 18-50mm f/1.8-4 and says the newer model's upgrades amount to a slightly more responsive touchscreen. A Japanese best-seller list in August 2026 marked the ZV-1 II as out of production, but Pictureline and Camera West still had it in stock in late October.
If you want to stay with Canon, the PowerShot V1 is the video-first choice, with a 1.4-inch sensor and 4K 60p (cropped, per DCW). For clips only, DJI's Osmo Pocket 3 is a pocket video camera with a 1-inch sensor, 4K/120fps and a 2-inch rotating screen; DJI's US store listed it at $439 but out of stock on October 28, 2026.
The G7 X Mark III has a 3.5mm mic port, so if you record talking, check that any replacement takes an external microphone too.

Which G7X alternatives have a flash for the digicam look?
The flash is part of why the G7X took off. Where a phone uses an LED, the G7 X Mark III fires a xenon flash, which Digital Camera World says is more powerful and helps deliver the retro direct-flash look.
Among the new cameras compared above, the Sony RX100 VII and Canon SX740 HS have built-in flashes, and the Leica D-Lux 8 comes with a separate on-camera unit. The Sony ZV-1, ZV-1 II and ZV-1F, the PowerShot V1, the Ricoh GR IV and the Lumix L10 have no built-in flash.
The cheapest route to the look is an old CCD point-and-shoot with a built-in flash. Our guides to the Canon PowerShot ELPH, Sony Cyber-shot and Nikon Coolpix lines cover what to look for in each, and How to Get the Y2K Digicam Look covers the shooting side. For the basics of flash itself, see the flash photography guide.
Georges Cameras' tip for a crisp digicam look: force the flash on in daylight and set exposure compensation to -0.3 or -0.7.

Is the Canon G7X or SX740 better?
They do different jobs. The G7X pairs a 1-inch sensor with a bright 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, and Digital Camera World calls that sensor format a big step up in image quality from the SX740 HS's smaller 1/2.3-inch sensor. The SX740 answers with reach: a 40x zoom that goes to 960mm equivalent.
Both have a flash and a flip-up screen, and both were backordered on Yodobashi's Japanese best-seller chart in August 2026. DCW lists the SX740's image quality as not brilliant and notes it can't shoot raw. Pick the G7X, or a 1-inch alternative, for image quality; pick the SX740 for travel zoom at a lower price, $549.99 against $929.99 at Pictureline, though both were out of stock there in October 2026.

Why is the Canon G7X so popular, and why is it always sold out?
The G7 X Mark III launched in 2019 and went viral in 2024. Digital Camera World credits its zoom, which is far more flattering for faces than a phone's selfie lens, and its xenon flash; Wikipedia adds portability, ease of use and pleasing straight-out-of-camera color. The New York Times called it the 'it girl' camera, as DCW reported.
Supply has not caught up. Canon said in July 2026 it would expand compact production to end shortages, its compact sales rose more than 50 percent in the third quarter, and on October 27, 2026 it warned that component shortages will likely limit how many compacts it can make.
The gap shows in prices. Digital Camera World put the list price at $879 in August 2026 and found used copies selling for more than $1,500 at KEH, MPB and Adorama. On October 28, 2026, Pictureline and Camera West listed it new at $929.99 and $929.00 but out of stock, and eBay's product page showed $1,725 new and $1,099 used. An earlier DCW piece (March 2025) put the original list price at about $800; sources differ on the baseline.

How to choose a Canon G7X alternative
Work out which part of the G7X you actually want, then check these in order.
- 1
Name the feature you want
The G7X mixes a 1-inch sensor, a 24-100mm zoom, a flip-up screen and a xenon flash. Vloggers should weigh the screen and autofocus, travelers the zoom and digicam fans the flash; no single alternative wins on all four.
- 2
Match the sensor size
A 1-inch sensor (ZV-1 series, RX100 series, G7 X Mark II) matches the G7X. The V1 (1.4-inch), L10 and D-Lux 8 (Micro Four Thirds) and GR IV (APS-C) go bigger; zoom compacts like the SX740 HS, Lumix ZS99 and ELPH 360 HS A use a much smaller 1/2.3-inch sensor.
- 3
Check the long end of the zoom
The G7X reaches 100mm; the ZV-1 II stops at 50mm, the ZV-1F and GR IV have no optical zoom, and the RX100 VII goes to 200mm. Digital Camera World points out that a zoom is far more flattering for faces than a phone's selfie lens.
- 4
Decide on the flash
Of the cameras compared above, the RX100 VII, the SX740 HS and the D-Lux 8 (separate flash included) are the ones with a flash. An old digicam is the cheap route to the direct-flash look.
- 5
Think about a viewfinder
The G7X has no viewfinder. If you shoot a lot in bright sun, the RX100 VII, D-Lux 8 and Lumix L10 have one; the ZV-1, V1 and GR IV rely on the screen.
- 6
Compare with the real G7X price
A new G7 X Mark III lists for $929 to $929.99 at US dealers, so paying a reseller $1,500 or more is a markup. If only the G7X will do, join the notify list at Pictureline or the waitlist at Camera West.
- 7
Test a used G7X before paying
Canon's South and Southeast Asia support site has published a fix for a false 'overheated' warning in movie mode on some Mark III cameras: set the date and time, power off and leave it off for at least 90 minutes. Record a short clip and check the screen and lens before you buy.

Other Canon G7X alternatives worth a look
These came up in the guides and spec lists too, but each suits a narrower need.
- Ricoh GR IV ($1,596.95 to $1,599.95): Digital Camera World's top street compact, with an APS-C 25.7MP sensor behind a fixed 28mm f/2.8 lens. No zoom, no built-in flash, no viewfinder and very limited video.
- Panasonic Lumix L10 ($1,499.99, out of stock at Pictureline): DCW's best zoom compact, with a Micro Four Thirds sensor, a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 zoom and an OLED viewfinder, but no flash.
- Panasonic Lumix ZS99 ($697.99, in stock at Pictureline): a 30x 24-720mm zoom on a 20.3MP 1/2.3-inch sensor, the in-stock option if the SX740 HS is sold out.
- Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A ($379.99 at Pictureline): DCW's best budget compact, a 25-300mm zoom on a 1/2.3-inch sensor. It shoots JPEG only, and DCW calls its video quality poor.
- Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II (used): launched alongside the G7 X Mark III in 2019, with a 20MP 1-inch sensor, a longer 24-120mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom and a pop-up viewfinder. By February 2024 only the G7 X Mark II and Mark III were still in production, so this one is a used-market hunt.
- Older Sony RX100 models (used): the RX100 III from 2014 brought the 24-70mm f/1.8-2.8 lens. Camera West listed a pre-owned RX100 II at $350 (sold out on October 28, 2026).

Questions people ask
What is a cheaper alternative to the Canon G7X?
New, the Sony ZV-1F ($598 at Pictureline) is the cheapest 1-inch compact in stock here, and the Canon ELPH 360 HS A ($379.99) trades sensor size for a 25-300mm zoom, both checked October 2026. Used, an older Sony RX100 or an early-2000s CCD digicam costs far less; The Phoblographer found many digicams under $50 in April 2025.

Is the Sony ZV-1 better than the Canon G7X?
For vlogging, Digital Camera World says yes: the Sony beats the G7 X Mark III for screen articulation, autofocus and audio. The G7X keeps a longer 24-100mm zoom and a built-in flash; the ZV-1 has a 24-70mm lens and no flash or viewfinder.
Sources: digitalcameraworld.com, digitalcameraworld.com
Is the Canon PowerShot V1 the replacement for the G7X?
No. Digital Camera World says the V1 complements the G7 X rather than replacing it: it is a video-first camera with a 1.4-inch sensor and a 16-50mm lens, but no built-in flash or viewfinder. Camera West sold it for $1,029 in October 2026.
Sources: digitalcameraworld.com, digitalcameraworld.com, camerawest.com
Is there a Canon G7X Mark IV?
None of the sources checked for this guide mention one as of October 2026. The 2025 PowerShot V1 was the compact many expected to replace the G7 X, but Digital Camera World says Canon launched it as a camera that complements the G7 X instead.
Sources: digitalcameraworld.com
Is the G7X Mark II as good as the Mark III?
The lens matches: both have a 1-inch sensor and a 24-100mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom. The Mark III added 4K video (the Mark II tops out at Full HD) and swapped micro USB for USB-C. Used Mark II prices have climbed too, with eBay's product page showing $665 used in October 2026.

Who is Canon's biggest competitor?
In pocket cameras, Sony. Canon designed the original 2014 G7 X to compete with Sony's RX100 series, and Sony's ZV-1 cameras are the top picks in Layers of Beauty's and Photoco's G7X alternatives guides today. Canon itself is described as the world's largest digital camera maker.

What are the top 5 best cameras?
For compacts, Japan's Yodobashi sales chart for early August 2026 ran Canon SX740 HS, Canon G7 X Mark III, Sony ZV-1 II, Ricoh GR IV and Fujifilm X100VI. Digital Camera World's best-compact list opens with the Fujifilm X100VI, Sony ZV-1, Canon ELPH 360 HS A, Panasonic Lumix L10 and Ricoh GR IV.
Sources: digitalcameraworld.com, digitalcameraworld.com
Is the G7X Mark III worth $1,500?
Not as a new-camera price: US dealers list it at $929 to $929.99 (October 2026), so $1,500 is a reseller markup. Digital Camera World's Hillary Grigonis wrote in March 2025 that she would not pay scalpers more than twice the original list price, and that with $1,600 to spend she would buy a Leica D-Lux 8 instead; Camera West lists the D-Lux 8 at $1,915 now.
