Canon PowerShot SX530 HS: is the 50x zoom still worth buying?

The short answer

The Canon PowerShot SX530 HS is a 2015 bridge camera bought for one thing, its 50x, 24-1200mm zoom, and reviewers and owners agree it reaches birds and distant subjects with bright, warm JPEGs in good light.

The trade-offs are just as consistent: no viewfinder, a screen that is hard to see in sun, slow focus at full zoom and grainy files from about ISO 800. On November 2, 2026, used copies on eBay asked $199.95 to $325 before shipping.

The short version

It went on sale in February 2015 at a list price of $429.99 according to Imaging Resource ($379.99 according to Photography Blog), replaced the SX520 HS with a longer lens and Wi-Fi with NFC, and gave way to the 20 MP SX540 HS in 2016. Camera Labs recommended it for its balance of features and price; Tom's Guide thought most shoppers would not pay $300 just for its edge over a smartphone, though it said bird and nature watchers will appreciate the zoom.

Bought used today, condition matters more than specs. Owner repair questions on iFixit center on E42 lens errors, batteries that read full and then die, and lost battery doors, so check those before you pay, and plan on a spare NB-6LH battery: Camera Labs says the rated 210 shots per charge won't cover a full day.

Good fit if

  • You want long reach on a budget: 24-1200mm equivalent, enough for an osprey at 75 yards, one eBay owner reports
  • You shoot mostly in daylight, where reviewers found colors bright and punchy and photos slightly better than 2015 phones
  • You want a light superzoom: 442 g (15.6 oz) with the battery
  • You want point-and-shoot ease with manual modes there when you need them
  • You film casual 1080p clips in good light, where most reviewers and owners rate the video good

Think twice if

  • You need a viewfinder: there is none, and the fixed 461k-dot screen is hard to see in bright sun
  • You shoot indoors or at dusk: noise shows from about ISO 800, and Camera Labs saw focus fail to lock in twilight
  • You track birds in flight: full-resolution burst is about 1.6 frames per second, and PCMag UK saw focus take over 2 seconds on a completely blurred subject at full zoom
  • You want RAW files or a flip screen: it shoots JPEG only on a fixed screen, and Photography Blog points to the SX60 HS for those
  • You want it in a jacket pocket: Photography Blog says it won't fit one; Canon's SX740 HS is a smaller 2018 compact, 299 g with battery per Imaging Resource

Canon PowerShot SX bridge cameras around the SX530 HS

Canon's SX bridge line goes back to models like the SX40 HS of September 2011. The SX530 HS shares its 24-1200mm range with the older SX50 HS and its body with the newer SX540 HS, while the cheaper SX410 IS uses a CCD sensor.

ModelYearSensorWhy look for it
PowerShot SX50 HS201212.1 MP 1/2.3-inch CMOSThe first with the same 24-1200mm, f/3.4-6.5 range (September 2012), in a heavier 595 g body with a vari-angle screen.
PowerShot SX520 HS201416.0 MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS, DIGIC 4+The predecessor: 42x (24-1008mm, f/3.4-5.8) and no Wi-Fi. Camera Labs says the SX530 HS replaced it only six months later.
PowerShot SX530 HS201516.0 MP 1/2.3-inch back-illuminated CMOS, DIGIC 4+This camera: 50x, 24-1200mm, Wi-Fi with NFC, 1080p at 30 fps and 442 g with the battery.
PowerShot SX540 HS201620.2 MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS, DIGIC 6The successor: same lens, identical size and shape, and Full HD video at 60p. Imaging Resource lists the sensor as 20.3 MP.
PowerShot SX60 HS201416.1 MP 1/2.3-inch CMOSThe step up: a 65x lens, a 922k-dot electronic viewfinder, a flip-out screen and RAW.
PowerShot SX410 IS201520.0 MP 1/2.3-inch CCDThe cheaper, smaller step down: 40x (24-960mm). Imaging Resource says it keeps a CCD sensor like the older SX400 IS.

What owners and reviewers say, topic by topic

We sorted 102 opinions about the SX530 HS from 33 pages and videos on 13 websites and channels. Each row shows how many people raised a topic and how many of them were positive. Open a row to read short quotes, each linked to its source.

Most text opinions come from editorial reviews written in 2015 and 2016, plus eBay buyer reviews and five YouTube reviews. Every reliability report comes from iFixit repair questions, so failures are over-represented. Reddit, DPReview forums and the B&H, Adorama and Best Buy reviews could not be read.

  1. Image look60% positiveof 15

Mostly praised: reviewers call daylight JPEGs bright, punchy and warm, and owners like how sharp distant subjects look at full zoom. The complaints are flatter contrast at mid zoom, blurry close-ups for one owner and a narrow aperture range.

  2. Ease of use27% positiveof 15

Mixed to negative. Owners and reviewers find it simple out of the box, but the fixed center AF point, slow or hesitant focus at long zoom and fiddly button-based manual focus draw most of the complaints.

  3. Low light and flash18% positiveof 11

The weak spot. Reviewers see noise from about ISO 800 and call ISO 1600 grungy or blurry, though Camera Labs still finds ISO 3200 worth having for shots you can't repeat (PCMag UK says to avoid it), and one eBay owner was happy with low-light trip photos.

    • “The photos get grainy though, in low-light situations.”

garybc, The Shy Photographer 2016-08Hands-on review

    • “This camera has great low light capabilities - much better than my older JVC camcorder.”

      boongsong, eBay customer review 2017-12Owner

    • “it only starts to become problematic or visible at around ISO 800 and above at normal printing sizes”

Amy Davies, Photography Blog 2015-10Hands-on review

    • “That’s not the case for 1600 ISO which is looking at bit grungy at 100 percent, though it looks fine at smaller sizes.”

Ken McMahon, Camera Labs 2015-10Hands-on review

  4. Video60% positiveof 10

Mostly positive: 1080p at 30 fps looks good in daylight to most reviewers and owners, and two video reviewers single out steady stabilization. Night clips get noisy, the zoom motor is audible and stabilization struggles at full zoom.

    • “With a fresh battery and fresh SD card the camera will shut off moments after starting to record a video”

      RichManSCTV0, iFixit Answers 2018-03Owner

    • “The picture and video quality is super”

      dswa4515, eBay customer review 2016-11Owner

    • “But aside from that, which is something we're used to seeing in superzoom cameras, the video is pretty good.”

Jim Fisher, PCMag UK 2015-03Hands-on review

    • “At night, however, my clip of traffic on Manhattan streets was covered with pixel noise”

Cherlynn Low, Tom's Guide 2015-05Hands-on review

  5. Screen and viewfinder0% positiveof 9

The most criticized area: there is no viewfinder, and the fixed 461k-dot screen is hard to see in bright sun at default brightness. Otherwise, PCMag UK found it sharp enough to confirm framing and focus, and Photography Blog says it copes well except in very bright sunlight.

  6. Batteries and charging13% positiveof 8

Rated at about 210 shots, or 290 in Eco mode, which Camera Labs says won't cover a full day's shooting, though Tom's Guide called the 223 shots it got enough for a full day of medium use. There is no in-camera charging; one cruise buyer called the battery long lasting. iFixit owners with older copies describe batteries that read full and then die.

    • “My camera never shows it has a low battery, It always shows full or half.”

      Julieanna Lopez, iFixit Answers 2021-02Owner

    • “In-camera charging is not available with this model.”

Jim Fisher, PCMag UK 2015-03Hands-on review

    • “plan to buy a second battery to be able to carry it on birding trips with out fear of running out of power”

      buddyroscoe, eBay customer review 2018-12Owner

    • “That’s not going to deliver a full day’s shooting unless you’re very frugal, but switch to Eco mode and you can squeeze 290 shots”

Ken McMahon, Camera Labs 2015-10Hands-on review

  7. Price and value75% positiveof 8

Positive across the board: Camera Labs, PCMag UK and owners call it good value for a 50x zoom. Tom's Guide was the cautious voice, saying most shoppers would not pay $300 just for its edge over a smartphone, though nature watchers will appreciate the zoom.

    • “Great camera for the money and the 50 X optical zoom is very impressive.”

      mattibeth, eBay customer review 2016-09Owner

    • “a solid choice if you're looking for a smaller model with an extremely long zoom lens at a decent price”

Jim Fisher, PCMag UK 2015-03Hands-on review

    • “The PowerShot SX530 HS provides a great balance of features at an affordable price point and comes highly recommended.”

Ken McMahon, Camera Labs 2015-10Hands-on review

    • “most shoppers will not drop $300 just for that”

Cherlynn Low, Tom's Guide 2015-05Hands-on review

  8. Build quality29% positiveof 7

Mostly negative: the light plastic body feels cheap to several reviewers and owners, though one blogger and one video reviewer found it solid with a good grip. Two iFixit owners report a lost battery door and a camera that died after a short drop.

    • “what can I do to stop the battery and card from falling out of the compartment”

      carol, iFixit Answers 2019-12Owner

    • “The body is smaller than I thought it would be and am not real happy with the material it is made from.”

      eBay customer review 2018-02Owner

    • “The 15.6-ounce camera's light, plastic body doesn't feel as sturdy as it looks, but at least it won't burden your shoulders.”

Cherlynn Low, Tom's Guide 2015-05Hands-on review

    • “The camera is well-built - there are no squeaking parts when it is held”

garybc, The Shy Photographer 2016-08Hands-on review

  9. Size and weight57% positiveof 7

Light for a superzoom and a bit smaller than an entry-level DSLR, owners say. It still won't fit a jacket pocket, and one buyer moving up from a small compact found it bulkier than expected.

  10. Reliability today0% positiveof 6

Every report here comes from iFixit repair questions, so it shows what fails, not how often: an E42 lens error, a loose zoom lever, a dead front dial after fog, a damaged USB port and a striped screen. One focus problem was fixed with a camera reset.

  11. Memory cards and transfer33% positiveof 6

Split. Camera Labs and a video reviewer found Wi-Fi and NFC transfers to a phone simple, but Photography Blog and an eBay owner couldn't get it to connect, and iFixit owners report a false Memory Card Locked message and a laptop that wouldn't see the camera.

PositiveMixedNegative

Is the Canon SX530 HS good for birding, wildlife and the moon?

Yes, if your subject sits still and the light is good. The 24-1200mm equivalent lens is why owners buy it: one eBay reviewer shot an osprey eating a fish in a tree at 75 yards and could see the sun reflected in its eye, and The Shy Photographer says you can photograph the whole scene and the full moon with it.

Moving birds are harder. Full-resolution burst runs at about 1.6 frames per second, and the 10 fps mode drops to 4 MP and locks focus and exposure on the first frame. PCMag UK saw autofocus take over 2 seconds to bring a completely blurred subject into focus when fully zoomed in, and in twilight Camera Labs found it sometimes would not lock at all.

Holding 1200mm steady is the other skill. Camera Labs got sharp hand-held shots down to 1/40 second at full zoom, about five stops of help from the stabilizer (Canon's own rating is about 2.5 stops), but The Shy Photographer warns that a tiny hand movement swings the frame a long way. With no viewfinder to brace against your face, lean on a post or wall, and use the Zoom Framing Assist button on the lens barrel: hold it to zoom out and find a lost bird, then let go to zoom back in.

Past 50x the camera switches to digital zoom, which Photography Blog found grainy and smudgy. According to the manual, the zoom bar is white for optical zoom, yellow for ZoomPlus, where the image isn't noticeably grainy, and blue for digital zoom that looks grainy, so stay out of the blue.

Best settings for the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS

These come from the launch reviews and Canon's own manual and support pages. They target the usual complaints: noise, missed focus and blur at long zoom.

  1. 1

Keep ISO as low as you can

Camera Labs recommends sticking to the base ISO 100 whenever possible, and Tom's Guide advises not going past ISO 1600 if you want to avoid grain. Auto ISO stops at 1600 on its own, so for darker scenes set the ISO yourself and accept more noise at 3200.

  2. 2

    Pick the right stabilizer mode

IS mode has three settings in the shooting menu: off, continuous and shoot only. Shoot only saves battery but gives a less steady live view, Camera Labs says, and Canon's support article for this model says to turn IS off when the camera is on a tripod.

  3. 3

Work around the fixed focus point

In single-area mode the AF frame is locked in the middle of the frame. Focus on the subject with a half-press, hold it and recompose, or switch to face detection (Face AiAF) for people.

  4. 4

    Stay inside the focusing range

Canon lists normal focus from 5 cm (about 2 inches) at wide angle but 1.3 m (about 4 feet) at full telephoto, and macro works at wide angle only. There, Photography Blog says, the lens focuses almost touching the subject, which suits flowers and small objects.

  5. 5

    Lift the flash by hand

There is no pop-up button, so raise the flash yourself before it will fire. Its range is 50 cm to 5.5 m (about 18 feet) at wide angle and 1.3 m to 3.0 m (about 10 feet) at full zoom, so it won't light a distant subject.

  6. 6

Tune the JPEG look in camera

Photography Blog found files a little soft at the default sharpening and says you can change the in-camera sharpening level if you don't like the default look. My Colors adds Vivid, Neutral, Sepia, Black & White and Positive Film, and the creative filters include toy camera, fish-eye and miniature.

  7. 7

Use Eco mode on long days

Eco mode dims the screen after a couple of seconds, turns it off ten seconds later and powers the camera down after three more minutes. Camera Labs says that stretches the battery from 210 to 290 shots.

Canon SX530 HS battery, charger, memory cards and Wi-Fi

The camera runs on Canon's NB-6LH, a 1,060 mAh lithium-ion pack rated for about 210 shots per charge, or 290 in Eco mode. Tom's Guide got 223 pictures, about 3 minutes of video and 30 minutes of Wi-Fi from one charge. There is no charging over USB: the battery goes in the supplied wall charger, which according to the manual takes about 2 hours, and Canon rates the pack for about 300 charge cycles.

A spare is cheap and worth carrying. On November 2, 2026, Wasabi Power listed a third-party NB-6LH for $11.88 and two batteries plus a charger for $20.99, and Focus Camera listed a Koah 1300 mAh pack with a charger for $12.99. One birder on eBay planned on a second battery so power wouldn't run out on trips.

Cards: one SD, SDHC or SDXC slot shares the battery door on the base, so you can't swap cards while a tripod plate is attached. For Full HD video Canon's spec asks for speed class 6 or faster (Camera Labs quotes class 4). Superfine JPEGs average about 6 MB, so a 32 GB card holds roughly 5,300 photos (32,000 MB divided by 6 MB), and 1080p video at about 30 Mbit/s fills a gigabyte every 4 to 5 minutes.

Getting photos off: the camera connects over USB as an MTP/PTP device and has Wi-Fi with NFC for Canon's Camera Connect app. Camera Labs found phone transfers fuss-free, but Photography Blog couldn't get the app to see the camera at launch, and remote shooting can't change aperture, shutter speed or exposure compensation. None of our sources confirms whether today's Camera Connect app still pairs with it.

According to the manual, no memory card comes in the box, and you shouldn't leave the battery charging for more than 24 hours.

What to check before buying a used SX530 HS

iFixit lists no recalls for this camera, but owner repair questions keep pointing at the same weak spots. Test these in person or ask the seller. If you mainly want the digicam look rather than reach, our cheap digicams guide covers smaller cameras.

  1. 1

Make sure it's an SX530, not an SX540

The two bodies are identical in size and shape, so read the model name on the camera. iFixit identifies the SX530 HS by model number PC2200; the SX540 HS is the 20 MP one with 60p video.

  2. 2

Run the zoom end to end

Zoom from 24mm to 1200mm and back several times, then switch off and watch the lens retract. A Lens Error message or an E42 code points to a lens that can't extend or retract, which can mean replacing the lens, according to an iFixit answer.

  3. 3

    Test the battery under load

Record a short video on a charged battery. Owners report cameras that shut off seconds into recording or batteries that read full and then die, so try a known-good NB-6LH before blaming the camera.

  4. 4

Check the battery door and card slot

One door covers both battery and card. One owner lost it entirely and the only advice on iFixit was to order a new one through Canon, so make sure it closes and latches, and that a card isn't reported as locked.

  5. 5

Look at the screen and controls

Watch for stripes or ripples on the rear screen, a zoom lever that moves the lens by itself and a front dial that doesn't respond. All three appear in iFixit owner reports.

  6. 6

    Ask what comes with it

According to the manual, the camera shipped with an NB-6LH battery, a CB-2LY charger, a neck strap and a lens cap on a cord, but no memory card. A missing charger matters, since the camera can't charge over USB.

Canon SX530 HS problems: E42 lens error, battery and screen faults

iFixit lists no recalls for the SX530 HS; these problems come from owner repair questions on iFixit and from Canon's manual, so they show what can go wrong on a camera from 2015, not how often.

Lens error or E42 code: the lens won't extend or retract

Raised in 2 opinions

How you notice
A Lens Error message or an E42 code at power-on, sometimes on a camera that can only be shut down by pulling the battery. Another owner's camera stopped moving its lens after a 2 ft drop onto the lens rim.
Fix
According to the manual, the error can appear if the lens is held while it moves or the camera is used in dust or sand, and frequent errors mean contacting Canon support. An iFixit answer says E42 usually means the lens can't extend or retract and may need a new lens; the owner who asked got the camera working again after days of trying fixes.
Typical cost
No US shop or Canon repair price found. iFixit's lens replacement guide rates the job moderate, 40 minutes to 2 hours, if you do it yourself.

Battery reads full, then the camera dies or stops recording

Raised in 3 opinions

How you notice
The gauge shows full or half and the camera shuts off, a charged battery drains seconds after power-on, or video stops moments after it starts with a charge-the-battery warning.
Fix
Start with a new NB-6LH: an iFixit answer notes that even rechargeable batteries have a lifespan, and the manual rates the pack for about 300 charge cycles. A commenter on another iFixit thread explains that a worn battery can power a still photo but not video, and says that if a new battery fails too, look for resistance inside the camera, such as at the battery contacts or from corrosion.
Typical cost
$11.88 for a third-party NB-6LH at Wasabi Power (November 2, 2026). No repair price found for the camera itself.

Memory Card Locked message with an unlocked card

Raised in 1 opinion

How you notice
The camera refuses to shoot and says the card is locked, even though the switch on the SD card is in the unlocked position.
Fix
According to the manual, the message means the card's write-protect tab is set to locked. If it isn't, an iFixit answer suggests trying the card in another camera; if it works there, check that the camera's switch isn't stuck and the slot is clean, and otherwise back up the card and format it in the camera.
Typical cost
Free to try; a new SD card is the next step. No repair price found.

Sources: gdlp01.c-wss.com, ifixit.com

Striped or rippled image on the rear screen

Raised in 1 opinion

How you notice
The live view suddenly turns rippled with bright stripes and distorted color, like an old TV, and the owner saw the same effect when reviewing pictures in the camera, though the files looked normal on a computer.
Fix
An iFixit answer says this points to a loose LCD cable or a faulty display, and links iFixit's display replacement guide, which shows how to open the camera and check the cable.
Typical cost
No part or shop price found.

Sources: ifixit.com, ifixit.com

Lost or broken battery door

Raised in 1 opinion

How you notice
Without the door over the shared battery and card compartment, the battery and card can fall out.
Fix
The one iFixit answer suggests asking Canon customer service or an authorized Canon dealer about ordering a new door. On a used copy, check that it closes and latches.
Typical cost
No price found.

Sources: ifixit.com

Dust inside the lens

How you notice
Specks visible inside the lens barrel.
Fix
A high-reputation iFixit answerer says you are better off living with internal dust than opening the lens and risking it, and that dust doesn't hurt resale because it is so common. A commenter adds that canned air is fine as long as the liquid doesn't settle on the lens elements.
Typical cost
Free if you leave it alone; no cleaning price found.

Questions people ask about the SX530 HS

Is the Canon PowerShot SX530 a good camera?

For its price and reach, reviewers mostly said yes. Camera Labs recommended it for a great balance of features at an affordable price, and PCMag UK called it a solid choice for a smaller model with an extremely long zoom. The common drawbacks are no viewfinder, slow focus at full zoom and grainy files in low light, so it suits daylight wildlife and travel more than indoor shooting.

Is a Canon PowerShot better than an iPhone?

For zoom, yes. In 2015 Tom's Guide found the SX530 HS took pictures slightly better than leading smartphones in good light, with far more reach. That test used 2015 phones, and the SX530's weak spot against any phone is low light, where its small sensor and f/6.5 long end turn photos grainy. Our guide to [what a digicam is](/digicams/) covers the wider camera-versus-phone question.

Why is my Canon PowerShot so blurry?

On the SX530 HS, blur usually comes from shake at long zoom, digital zoom or focusing too close. Canon's support article for this model says to hold the camera firmly, set IS mode to Continuous, use flash or a higher ISO in dim light, turn IS off on a tripod and half-press to focus. At full zoom the lens won't focus closer than 1.3 m (about 4 feet), and anything past 50x is digital zoom, which Photography Blog found grainy and smudgy.

Does the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS have a viewfinder?

No. You compose on a fixed 3-inch, 461,000-dot LCD, which Photography Blog says copes well except in very bright sunlight; Tom's Guide had to turn brightness to maximum to see it outdoors. For an eye-level viewfinder in the same family, Photography Blog points to the SX60 HS.

Does the Canon SX530 HS shoot RAW?

No, it records JPEG only. Photography Blog says RAW would be nice but isn't surprising at the price, and suggests the SX60 HS for people who want RAW and a viewfinder. To change the JPEG look, use the sharpening setting, My Colors styles such as Positive Film, or the creative filters.

Can the Canon PowerShot SX530 HS charge over USB?

No. PCMag UK notes that in-camera charging isn't available, so the NB-6LH battery charges in the supplied external charger, which according to the manual takes about 2 hours. A charge is rated for about 210 shots, or 290 in Eco mode, so carry a spare for a full day.

Can the Canon SX530 HS photograph the moon?

Yes. The Shy Photographer says you can photograph the whole scene and the full moon with it, thanks to the 1200mm equivalent reach. Use a tripod with IS turned off, as Canon advises, and keep ISO low, since files get noisy from about ISO 800.

  • Canon PowerShot SX60 HS
