Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald whittled down over 4,500 hours of footage into a 90-minute film that wowed audiences at the Sundance, Berlin and SXSW Film Festivals earlier this year. Here is your chance to be a part of this event.

We have 5 pairs of tickets for the July 24th screening. If there is a screening in your area, post to the comments below with the city you are able to go to and on Friday at noon we will draw our winners.

On July 24, 2011, Life in a Day will continue its journey when it premieres in theaters across the U.S. Additional screenings will be added July 29.

Ronkonkoma, NY, Nov. 30, 2010 – Sigma Corporation of America is currently accepting photo and application submissions for its second annual Scholarship Contest. The contest, which will award $6,000 in cash and photography gear, is open to all high school seniors who plan to pursue a photo-related career.

Applications for the contest are now being accepted through Feb. 28, 2011 via the Sigma scholarship website. Students interested in entering the contest must submit between three and five photos that are thematically tied. These photos must also represent outstanding image quality, a concept that is the foundation of Sigma Corporation’s commitment to the photographic industry. In addition, students must complete an essay of between 300 and 800 words that describes their creative process in shooting, selecting and editing their photos.

Students pursuing higher education in industries such as photography, photojournalism, graphic arts and design, visual arts and art history are eligible to apply, and each submission will be judged on the creativity of the subject selection, overall technique, and image quality.

“The images submitted in our first scholarship contest exhibited a high level of skill and passion which was a true pleasure to see,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, general manager of Sigma Corporation of America. “Our support of these talented young photographers has been confirmed and we very much look forward to seeing what this year’s competition will produce.”

Sigma’s first Scholarship Contest winner, Jamie Russell of Cheektowaga, N.Y., submitted a series of photographs depicting poverty in her hometown. A total of 122 students competed in the contest.

A public, online vote will be held from March 1, 2011 until April 1, 2011, and the top five vote-getters will become finalists. Sigma executives will then choose the Scholarship winner; the winner will be announced on April 18, 2011.

For information about the Sigma Corporation of America Scholarship, eligibility, the application process, material submissions and a formal list of contest rules, visit http://www.sigmaphoto.com/scholarship/. For information on Sigma Corporation of America and its lenses, cameras and flashes, visit www.sigmaphoto.com.

We are huge fans of making sure you have a good backup of your data and we have been looking for a good solution that will be easy to setup, reliable, and simple to manage. What we found was the HP MediaSmart EX495. The EX495 is not just a network share device, it also features software for Windows and Macs to automate backups. But wait, there’s more! It’s also a complete media server system as well. Before I get into the technical details of this cool little device, I want to announce that HP is giving one to a lucky Camera Dojo reader!! Read on for details on this fun contest but first, more about what the HP MediaSmart Server can do for you.The HP Media Smart Server is the all-in-one solution to manage your media: a home server that can automatically backup and protect your digital memories, centralize your media and content for sharing with family and friends, and enable you to enjoy your digital media while at home or away.

Powered by Microsoft® Windows® Home Server software

The EX495 with an Intel® Pentium® Processor Dual Core 2.5 GHZ 64-bit

Capacities: 1.5TB single drive. 3 empty hard disk drive bays for internal expandability.

Expandable up to 17TB

Network-based backup of PCs using Windows® Home Server as well as Macs using Apple’s Time Machine®

Photo and video sharing with family and friends

Remote access to digital media, files and PCs from any Internet connected PC or Mac®

Media streaming of photos, music and videos to PCs, the entertainment center and remote devices including the iPhone®

The HP Video Converter converts your video library on the server (including unprotected DVD’s) into a MPEG-4 (H.264) video format.(f) Plus, you control how your videos are converted by selecting the device your video will be played on or specify the video settings yourself.

HP Media Collector automatically collects, organizes and centralizes your media files from multiple Windows PCs and Macs (including iPhoto®, iTunes®, and iMovie® libraries) to the server so you can easily find, share and stream your media.

What’s that all mean?

Technical mumbo-jumbo aside, the MediaSmart EX495 provides you with a network share for having a complete, secure file server on your network, gives you automated backups to both Windows and Macintosh client systems, and can convert video files into different formats and stream them to PC’s, Media Extenders, and even iPhone/iPod Touches.

The base unit comes with 1.5tb of storage and has 3 additional bays for additional drives as well as being able to use external USB or eSata storage devices.

What the EX495 is not, is it is not a RAID system like a Drobo is, instead it has a unique system that allows you to choose which folders you want duplicated across multiple drives within the system for redundancy. For example, you may want your pictures saved to two drives, but your converted videos you may not care about having a backup of. This helps optimize disk space within the system.

HP provided me with one of the units to solve the storage needs of Camera Dojo and I am so impressed with it that HP and Camera Dojo are going to give one away.

The Contest Details

This is supposed to be more about having fun than being super technical and instead of being a photography contest, this one is going to be about image manipulation. The winner will be chosen on originality and concept and not about being super technically proficient with Photoshop. The winner will receive an HP MediaSmart EX490 with 1tb of storage and Intel Celeron Processor.

What you need to do is take the Camera Dojo logo, manipulate it any way you want, put it anywhere, on body parts, 18 wheelers, etc. The idea is to have fun with this idea. To enter this contest, send your image (800 pixels wide on the long side) to contest@cameradojo.com with the subject MediaSmart Contest.

The contest will end on December 20th. Throughout the contest, the top entries will be posted to CameraDojo.com. To download a hi resolution version of the Camera Dojo logo, click here (right-click and select save as).

THE RULES:

1. You have to be in the pic. You are welcome to have others in the picture as well!
2. The pic has to say somewhere “I Want to Shoot With Scarlett In Vegas” whether holding a sign or photoshopped or whatever.
3. Get creative as you want, and try to tie in something Vegas into it! You can dress up like Elvis, or reenact Britney’s quickie Vegas wedding, or show me your winning hand at poker, or whatever you want!
4. Once voting is opened up, you will want to blog/Facebook/Twitter about your contest entry and direct people to come vote for you here on my blog!

Because WPPI is quickly approaching, the DEADLINE for contest entries is next Monday, February 2 when the Finale of my video blog premieres!! Then we’ll have my blog readers vote on the winning photo to award the winner! There is limited availability for the workshop to keep the group intimate for learning and getting the best shots, so for those interested, go ahead and sign up now, and if you win, I’ll refund your session fee!

Thanks to these amazing sponsors! Check them out!!!

This contest is going to be about ‘Converging Lines”. Since an image with converging lines adds a nice dimension to your images, it seems like good practice to go out and shoot some images with this as a theme. The winner will get a nice prize package consisting of:

R-Strap Camera Strap Courtesy of BlackRapid

Fast Track Photographer Audiobook courtesy of Esquire Photography

Dojo Wedding Tools Presets for Lightroom

Dojo Power Tools Presets for Lightroom

All together this is about a $200 prize package.

Example from Roberto Valenzuela

Example of Converging Lines from Roberto Valenzuela

Contest Rules

Please get this right so you do not get disqualified. To enter your image into the contest, upload it to your Flickr account. You will need to be a member of the Camera Dojo Flickr Group and then you can add your image to the Group photo pool. You must tag your image with the words Contest and Lines. This will allow me to find them easily.

You must only upload images that you took yourself. We will post the winner’s pictures on CameraDojo.com but you will retain all copyright to the image. We suggest you have a watermark on your images as well. The deadline for entries is Feb 28th 2009 and the winner will be named on the following podcast.
