If you just use on-camera flash you will get very flat lighting which isn’t going to make the people look very good plus it also makes harsh shadows behind them. What you really want is some good directional lighting from one side with just enough fill light to reduce shadowing on the other side. In this article we are going to look at the basic lighting setup I use for these types of portraits and how it works.

The fact is, eTTL (Canon) and iTTL (Nikon) modes do work pretty good most of the time. However, there are two basic issues that these modes suffer from that there is simply no way to avoid. First off, the camera/flash doesn’t know what you are trying to accomplish, it will simply attempt to get a good exposure based on what the camera is seeing which may or may not be how you are trying to light the scene. Secondly, the metering modes can be confused by what the light is pointing at, this can result in over-exposed or under-exposed images. In this first part of our Mastering Your Flash 101 Series, we will address these two issues and learn to fine tune what our flash is doing.

First, hell is not freezing over, pigs are not flying, and the world is not coming to an end, although many of you may think so since I am going to be talking about some studio lights rather than speedlites. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE speedlites! The small size, battery powered, ultra portable boxes of magic that they are just brings a smile to my face. However, speedlites, for all their goodness, are lacking in one very particular area….raw power! When you need just pure lighting horsepower, no speedlite can match a good quality monolight. I was first introduced to Multiblitz studio lights at the 2012 WPPI show and instantly fell in love with their lighting kits. The good folks over at Multiblitz were kind enough to send over a kit for me to review and to use for some upcoming lighting tutorials.

Each week I will be posting a new video to help you learn everything from the basics of Lightroom to advanced techniques. In this first episode I go over the basic tools in the Develop module to help new users of Lightroom get up to speed and to show users of older versions what Lightroom 4 is like.

Be sure and let me know what you think and if you have any requests on specific topics you would like to see covered.

Most of the poses we have seen so far in our posing series have been used to show a woman’s curves or can even be used to hide unwanted curves. This pose, which I call The Step Up, is a much stronger pose generally which helps add certain strength to a woman’s look. All we are doing in The Step Up is having one leg that is stepping up onto a platform or object.

Yes, that is a pretty bold statement, but let’s face reality here, it is more than “just likely” that ALL cameras will be mirrorless in the very near future. Whether its in the small form factor of the EOS M or Sony NEX 7 or in the shape of a DSLR like the Sony A99, mirrorless is the future of camera design. Where companies are struggling right now is positioning existing models into existing markets. Such is the case with the Canon EOS M, is it a high end consumer camera or a low-end extra camera for advanced users. This is going to be a hard question to answer as we take our look inside the Canon EOS M. To help answer the question for myself, I rented one for the weekend from BorrowLenses.com.

In the second installment of our Posing Basics series we will look at another simple technique to add a little style to your subjects with just a little knee action. The result is very similar to the S Curve but usually isn’t quite as dramatic. In the first set of examples one knee is turned in such that the presentation leg is turned so that the knee is bent in towards the other leg.

We have had Jason on the podcast before talking about lighting and that turned out to be an extremely popular podcast. Recently, Jason has taken the position of Director for WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) which hosts a large conference in Las Vegas every winter.

During this episode we talk about what WPPI is all about, who should go, and how to make the most out of an experience like this. If you are considering attending, or are on the fence, then listen to the program and see if it helps to clarify what your expectations are.

After the appropriate jokes about what I could possibly be doing I explained that I was going through the popular magazines and sorting the advertisements by poses. This turned out to be an excellent way to learn about posing and in this series about posing, we will go through the most popular poses and see how you can use them with your clients to make them look their best. We are going to start off with the S curve.

DSLR’s (Digital Single Lens Reflex) are available for affordable prices.

These cameras can keep up with the best of them when you have the right filters and lenses. In fact, you will see many professional photographers in Las Vegas using them on site.

Our lucky winner is Jeff Sipper from Sipper Photography. I’ve known Jeff and Dana for a few years and they are an amazing pair of wedding photographers. Dana is currently pregnant and due in spring. Maybe they will use the new Tech Table as a baby changing table! Congrats to Jeff for being a winner and to both Jeff and Dana on their Sipper Baby 1.0 due out soon!

My schedule has been the craziest ever with a full 1/3 of the year spend on the road. I want to especially thank a few people who, without their help, there wouldn’t have been much content or any podcasts this year.

Debra Ekas – Show Coordinator and idea bouncer off-er
Debra was a HUGE help this year by scheduling virtually all of the guests we had on the show all year.We had a great run of guest that the listeners really enjoyed.

Chris Diset – Podcast Co-Host
Without Chris, we wouldn’t have been able to record the shows and keep me sane enough to get through some of the shows after horrendous bouts of no sleep and jet lag

A huge thanks goes out to all of the readers and listeners because it is for you that we put in the effort to create content.

So here’s the thing….it appears my schedule is going to be even worse on 2013 and likely a cross-country move will end up happening in a few months as well. The idea of Camera Dojo was to provide a place where other photographers could share their knowledge and experience but I have created well over 99% of the content. If you would like to contribute to Camera Dojo and share your knowledge please read the “Submit an Article” at the top of the page or use the Contact page to get a hold of us. We really look forward to bringing more photographers to help write content and do video tutorials.

Happy New Year everyone and best wishes for 2013!!

An unrelenting passion for outdoor adventures made it clear that Jerry was not destined for a desk job – the successful career he has built fosters a lifestyle that the average person might call unconventional.

Jerry is also one of the brains behind a new camera bag company called MindShift Gear that is designing camera bags specifically for outdoor use. During the show we talk about the new gear but also how and why they used Kickstarter to launch the company.

<itunes:summary>Jerry Dodrill is an award-winning adventure and landscape photographer who early in his career was a protégé of legendary photographer Galen Rowell.

Savage Paper has just released their new Tech Tables workflow solutions for tethered shooting. The Tech Tables are a modular system that starts with a metal base plate that connects to a tripod or light stand and a handful of components that connect to the base. The base package comes with the base, a mouse pad, cable hanger, and a plate you can mount a ball head to for your camera.

You Can Win One!

Camera Dojo has one of these Tech Tables sitting here in the studio to give away to a lucky winner. All you need to do is go to http://www.savagepaper.com and take a look through their products and then in the comments below, tell us what your favorite product you found there is and how you would use it. The contest ends on December 31st 2012 at midnight. The winner will be drawn on January 1st.

But Wait There’s More!

What’s the problem with a contest like this? Well, there is only one winner right? Well…not so fast. You actually have TWO chances to win! Not only can you enter to win a Tech Table here at Camera Dojo, you can also head over to CanonBlogger.com and enter there as well. Both sites will draw winners although in the unlikely event we both draw the same person, we will draw a second person to win one so you can only win once.
