I completely understand what you are saying and you are mostly correct. I shoot in manual because I am used to it and I want to make the decision between shutter speed and aperture. Is that overkill? Perhaps, but I do believe you should be able to shoot in manual mode and be comfortable doing so. When you are shooting, use whatever mode you are comfortable with and you may never, or only rarely need to shoot in manual. It is purely a choice but a good photographer should know how.

The flash should be in M mode and start with your camera in Manual, this is the most basic configuration and the flash should fire.

This is what you don't understand about the auto modes. Neither shutter priority nor aperture priority, not even program mode is trying to determine anything. The "auto" of the auto modes refers to one single act of automation...aligning the camera's exposure with the meter. When you center the exposure indicator in manual mode...that's all the auto modes are doing. If you want to over or underexpose then you simply apply Exposure Compensation. The result is the same. You don't have any more or less control in manual mode than the auto modes. In fact, most camera controls are set so that the manual operation and auto/EC operation are practically identical.

The one camera function that's really making decisions for you is multi-segmented metering (Matrix for Nikon and Evaluative for Canon.) If you're shooting in one of those modes then the camera is making exposure compensation decisions for you. With those modes, if you're shooting in manual mode then you're just fooling yourself into thinking you have total control of your camera. You don't. You're really just one step away from a Point and Shoot.

Welcome to the horrible world of video on DSLRs. This is why many filmmakers use very high end lenses and all manual focus lenses.

Absolutely disagree with you on this. No automatic mode is going to know how I want something to look. Anytime the camera is trying to determine what IT thinks is the right exposure there is a risk that it will not do what I am intending it to do.

That being said, for the VAST majority of shots, the automatic modes are absolutely appropriate and learning manual mode is only for when you are not getting what you want from the camera.

Great post!
With video/7D - Im also wondering about zoom capabilities with lenses attached to the 7D - they seem to lose focus on zooming and you have to press the shutter half way down to refocus which takes a few seconds and looks unprofessional.
Do I have to buy parfocal lenses for when Im filming and need to use the zoom?

I find it sad that so many articles out there are telling people that they have to shoot in manual mode "in order to make the most of your camera" when the fact of the matter is that you have just as much control over your camera in auto modes as you do in manual mode. Proper auto technique provides superior control over the camera. And in changing-light conditions, auto techniques are the only way to get consistent exposures shot after shot.

On a modern camera manual mode is for times when the meter doesn't work, such as long exposures (night and astrophotography) and for certain types of flash photography. Otherwise, if the meter works then manual mode is the wrong mode.

Congrats Kerry,

Happy 5th anniversary. I hope you would do a reunion podcast with David Esquire. It would be great to talk about the advancements and setbacks in the photography industry.

It helps to realize (or keep in mind) that when shooting video, you are ACTUALLY shooting 24 STILL shots per second (or 30, or whatever your fps is set at). So, this means that all 24 photos taken in that second have the same characteristics as 1 still photograph. With still photography it is often desirable to "freeze" motion with a high shutter speed. This gives you a crisp clean photograph with no blurring. In Video, this crispness is unnatural and confuses the brain (most brains).

Unfortunately, no it doesn't. That's why shooting video gets very confusing. My Canon 7D maxes out at 30fps but I can set the shutter speed to 1/500th but I am still only shooting at 30fps but at a faster shutter speed each frame is exposed for a shorter period of time.

If you are shooting 24 fps, the shutter is opening 24 times a second, that would take care of the shutter speed. Doubling the shutter speed to 50 means you are taking 50 frames per second. Doesn't it ????

Downloaded Beta 4 today; many of the requests above made the cut. I like the changes to the basic Develop sliders, and the Adjustment Brush enhancements. The new Map and Book modules seem good for a first pass. Additional minor changes I'd like to see: using mouse scroll wheel to select image in Develop like it does in Library, Reverse the rotate slider in Develop -> Lens Corrections. Think it would be more intuitive. Flip the "Rotate" arrows in Library. Again, more intuitive. All seemingly minor but would help me greatly.

(no english native speaker) way too simple... achieving movement sensation it's not only a matter of blur. it's about visual dynamics. for example: paintings used to be statics given the nature of the creative process, so then, if you paint suspended animation, you'll provide motion sense. if you arrange lines and composition, you can do it too... so keep in mind, that it is a lot more complex, than just adjusting the shutter speed. this kind of tutorial is intended to make things look easier than they really are, so you can feel the achievement quick. but you'll be taking the same photograph everybody does, and there i'll be no personal vision... sorry for my english, it's not my language

What do you mean they can't be muted? You can't turn off the audio alert? I know I have dropped mine a few times and they have never broke. Once we started getting them with the metal hotshoe, I haven't even had a report of that breaking. Too bad you didn't buy the other ones from me or I would have done a warranty replacement.

Thanks for the encouragement Kerry. I've not experienced a lot of the "sharing" and support from other photographers. I have several friends who have been, but there's been a few out there who almost growled!! lol My daughter is really in to photography and bought a lighting set for me... Like you said, " get really good at that and then move on." Glad I found you!

The issue is the noise reduction. At freeway speeds there can be a lot of noise and trying to filter it out is very difficult. I am hoping to get a Hero 2 soon so I can plug in a good mic.

Digging your podcast so far Kerry, however the audio quality leaves me wanting to unsubscribe and forget about it.

Might I suggest you look into your encoder settings or seek better encoding software. The amount of compression leaves some of your podcasts sounding worse than nails on a chalkboard.

The 430 is a pretty weak flash unit and I would not shoot on P mode, I would shoot in manual to keep control over the camera.

1. SURELY Better support for video making - things like using multiple audio files for one mp4 file, ability to add multiple text slides in between, different duration for different slides etc
2. Borders, margins - very very basic requirement!
3. Make diptych/triptych/quadtych easily in LR itself..
4. Better clone/heal ability.
5. Adjustment of white balance of selected areas.
6. Basically everything that will make us run to photoshop :)

Hi

I want OLE Automation piloting from any language supporting OLE Automation, as it's possible with Photoshop (including access to photo library and metadatas ^_^)

A strong improvement in keyword management should be a good thing too :
- keywords replacement
- merging capabilities
- import/export of image lists with metadatas (in CSV, text, Excel formats...)

Another detail : retrieving pictures from a name list (usefull for professional photographers who work with photography agencies)

I've heard this so many times -- what a great picture, you must have a great camera. It's beyond idiotic, it's insulting, analogous to saying to Da Vinci, hey, what a great painting, you must have great brushes/paints/canvases, or to Beethoven, hey what a great sonata, you must have a great piano, or to Faulkner, hey what a great novel, you must have a terrific typewriter. (And no, I'm not comparing myself to any of them.)

Just saw something interesting.. Matt Kloskowski posted his Lightroom Killer Tips today, and in the video he saves a file...
In his Downloads folder is "LR4R15ReleaseNotes.pdf" and "LR_4.0_796371_osx10_Release_Installer.zip". So, it's coming soon! ;)

Fix the cropping tool! It is currently very hard to make fine adjustments with the crop tool since both the border and the image moves. Keep the image still and make the border a 1 px dashed line, please!

simple really - i would like the brush tool to have a square or rectangle option instead of just being round!
How many square items can you process with a round brush?

There's enough options in Photoshop, surely they can port one of them over?

Adding white balance to the adjustment brush would be a big win for me - I do architectural photography and there can be a huge difference between WB inside & outside. It would sure be nice to just 'brush' just the windows to warm them up!

On the first photo, there is only one Flash, it's true.
On the second one, I bet you have a slave flash hidden in the back of the model.
Look carefully at the arms and it seems obvious.
The lesson is: Masters only show one halk of the secrets ! ! !

Kerry, I agree with you 100% . Everyone has something to offer the another. I may not be a college Professor, but I have something to share with someone; even if it's about my life experience in making wrong choices and the consequences that followed. A lot of the things I encountered in life could have been avoided, if someone had taken the time to just teach me the basic.... Like, how to choose the best path for my life?

Paying it forward is a good thing! In our world today, we need all the good we can get.

You bring up a VERY interesting discussion. My response is based on several characteristics that may or may not be unique to me, but I assume could be somewhat universal. I have had a very successful career as a portrait photographer. I am at a total session count somewhere around 24,000 according to files that we have kept since inception of our business. Throughout most of the 80's and 90's I was extremely active in our state photography association as well as regional and national. Along with this very high volume of work that I was putting out I was at the same time receiving very much success in the print competition realm. 23 images in the loan collection, etc. etc.
Fast forward to today. Am I motivated? Am I inspired? I gotta tell you, I am tired. My theory is that when you are young and hungry maybe starving for the finances as well as still wearing rose tinted glasses in search of ideals, there is a heightened awareness of motivation and inspiration. Because at that point in your career, that is surrounding you immensely. There is something about a callous that dulls the sensitivity and truly the same as I feel dulls my need for motivation and inspiration. Yes, I still want it. But the motivation is very much lower now than it was when I first started. It's like, I want it. but I want it without the commitment that it requires. So, in the end, do I really have what it takes to be motivated and inspired. I am very impressed when I see older successful photographers that are still driven to seek and find that magic in photography.
In conclusion, I think that there is another element that effects these two wonderful feelings. Being burnt out. What causes that in myself, is a lack of clientele who are willing to hire me for what I do best. Or a lack of eccentric clientele, coming from a quiet conservative midwest community. Eccentric people make me very motivated and inspired. They are rare here. People lined up to spend money for gorgeous classic portraits makes me motivated and inspired as well. With the economy down here, that has also been lacking. And based on the success that I have had and saved for a rainy day, I have become very passive in my attempt to find the magic in my given market and economic state. Of course and also do to the fact that I have been conditioned over all these years, that if I'm not getting paid, I'm not shooting. That sounds callous as well, but for many years I was so busy shooting from morning till night that I didn't have time nor did I want to shoot just for the fun of it. So I know now that THAT is the answer. Get over the stigma of making money, OK it might even cost you some money, but get out and have FUN. (I'm still searching for that part of me that will let go and just have fun)
Thanks for your podcasts, love them.

What motivates me in photography is getting out of the house and taking advantage of the fresh air and strolling in the woods taking pictures of nature and wildlife for my personal benifit and enjoyment. I also enjoy taking candid photos of children doing their best "at play".

My main motivation being a youth, high school, and small college sports photographer, I want to give kids the photo of themselves playing sports that I wish I had of me growing up. I want to try and make them look like they are on the cover of a magazine or their favorite athlete on a commercial.

Inspiration comes from seeing what other people are doing. I constantly look at what other photographers are doing. I like to see how I can put my own spin on that photo and then see if I can go out and make that photo.

Shutter speed it important to give a more natural and realistic motion to your work on DSLR video, other wise a stuttery or slight juddery look can result. Also if it's to fast you can get artifacts and the rolling shutter effect is exacerbated as well.

Interesting conversation Kerry.
I have been motivated by: assignments, competition, and compensation at different points in the span of my relationship with the camera. In a class, when the instructor would set an assignment with specific parameters, it worked to inspire me to look differently. I am a very competitive person, so my fellow students, always motivated me to push my self further. Working for the paper, trying to meet their requirements, bummed me out, put me off photography for a while.
Inspiration though, comes from everything. Pretty light, new places, changing perspectives Reviewing and reflecting on classic works of art has inspired me to look at light and posing again. Lately I am inspired by the people around me that make art out of every day events. People that make it their mission to guide others to find , or make, their light.
You are right, inspiration is very personal, and motivation can be unique. But when you love something, motivation and inspiration do not have to be mutually exclusive. They can intersect in, art.

The price you have for the canon v1 is only for a USM no IS. The Sigma price is HSM & OS that's a huge difference in price. The street price for the canon v1 (USM IS) is $2k which makes it $600 more just to get IS on the canon. I got a Sigma...it rocks.

it seems like the camera has a good quality lens. As you said it lacks flash but it can still be good for some Pictorial on a good background. GoPro HD is too much expensive for me, though I want to try it some day.

The audio quality is much better on the newer ones. The point of the video was to show that I was doing it will driving so as to excuse some of the poorer-than-podcast audio. I have been updating the previous shows with audio-only and adding them to the podcast stream as quickly as I can. I should be all caught up with them this week.

I'm going to echo the rest here. Personally I'm not a fan of these GoCasts because all 5 of them that I've listened to (for some reason iTunes is way behind on them) have really terrible sound. This one is especially bad to the point where it's pretty much unlistenable.

I'm not trying to complain for the sake of complaining. I think the short-format stream-of-consciousness format is a great addition to the show, but man I sure do wish you could find a way to fix the sound issues. I guess I'm just spoiled for audio quality :)

A last thought… why the need for video? Would an audio-only version of this done with a headset produce a better sound quality. I do enjoy watching the host of podcasts talk… I think it adds something sometimes, but watching you drive and (occasionally) address the camera actually makes it uncomfortable for me. I don't want you distracted from driving!

I hope that rambling makes some sort of sense!

This is one of the most confusing topics I have ever dealt with in all the years I have done photography. My basic understanding and based on my experiments, is that if we are going to slow down the video, if we had shot with a slower shutter speed we would get a softer image due to the blurring between frames. If we use a faster shutter speed we have more clean data to work with. A slower shutter speed provides less data so the final result will be worse.

Thank you for this post, it's been really helpful.
I have a question about the 'Exception to the Rule' that you mentioned though.

'If we use the basic rule of having a shutter speed that is double the frame rate, when we slow down the video we will end up with more blurry video. If you shoot at faster shutter speeds, when you slow the video down you will get cleaner looking video.'

The more I thought about this, the less it made sense to me.
Let's say I shoot at 50fps with 1/100 shutter speed (according to the 180 degree rule).
Now I slow the video down by playing it at 25fps - which means I'm playing 25fps video which was shot at 1/100 shutter speed. Wouldn't I rather want 25fps with 1/50 shutter speed? So my point is - in order to follow the 180 degree rule for the resulting video, wouldn't it make sense to shoot at SLOWER shutter speeds when shooting for slow motion?

But then I started thinking about the actual motion that was captured in each frame:
In the example given above the 1/100 shutter speed seems too fast for 25fps, but the sharper image might be justified by the fact that there is a lot less (blur-needing) motion in every image compared to video that was shot at 25 fps.
So it seems to me that if you're following the 180 degree rule when you're shooting the result might be just fine no matter at what speed it's going to be played.
Anyway - any further explanation would be appreciated. :)

I posted more images to flickr showing before and after lens correction. In all cases the lens correction was done in Lightroom with the maximum slider settings. As you can see from the images, the closer you are to a subject the harder it is to correct. The further away the subject is, the less noticable the distortion is. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kgarrison/tags/gopro/" rel="nofollow">http://www.flickr.com/photos/kgarrison/tags/gopro...</a>

The problem with that idea is the lack of a flash. You would be better off buying $99 point and shoot cameras. I will try to post some more extreme examples with before and after lens correction.

This camera looks like a lot of fun. I like the idea of sprinkling a lot of them around a wedding reception just to see what you get.

Since they're such wide angle cameras, if you have an interesting pic of a group of people, say at a specific table, can you fix the barrel distortion and crop the image and still come up with something worth printing? Any examples you can share?

Thanks,
John

You always do your white balance with the lights on that you are using. So with flash, you would use your flash to illuminate the scene when getting your white balance.

It was a combination of things. First off, I had to replace the GoPro back with the non-waterproof one. A waterproof case does not work well when recording audio. So it was pretty hard to pull the voice up out of the background noise. All of the others sound much better.

I am actually quite surprised that Canon didn't include the same level of audio control in their DSLR's that they have in their low-end consumer camcorders at a minimum. My three year old Vixia has AGC control, Mic Attenuation, and a basic audio level meter. My 7D has none of those basic features.

I mentioned this on Facebook, but the D7000 does have rough audio levels: Auto (AGC), High, Medium, Low, and Off. Of course then the next thing is why not have a finer level adjustment, like 0-11? And maybe even a "VU meter" to set the level? It's all just programming.

I actually bought a 5D mk2, after having owned a 50D for a year, simply because I had wanted video recording. Wish Magic Lantern had come up with this hack earlier!

Are you using a flash? Just shooting at night at ISO 800 will not make a good image unless you have additional lighting.

Thanks Paul. I really didn't know how people would react to this series. Since I was testing out the GoPros for another project i decided I would try to use them to create some unique content since I have be on the go so much recently. I hope you continue to enjoy them as there are more coming.

Definitely agree with you, Kerry!
I recently started a 365 Project in which I draw a random word each day and that word then becomes my subject. Many of the random words were offered from fans on my Facebook page. It's already given me an opportunity to experiment with different camera settings, angles, and lighting. I'm posting my images here: <a href="http://lukeslens.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">http://lukeslens.blogspot.com/</a>

I consider myself to be a pretty good photographer but I am not a wedding photographer and have never shot a wedding. When a couple hires a professional wedding photographer they are paying for much more then the photographers time, talent and expenses, they also are paying for their EXPERIENCE. I would never ever consider to be hired as the wedding photographer. I can take well composed, technically good images, but I DO NOT have the experience needed to cover all the bases shooting a wedding. I would do a much better job then uncle Bob would, but that alone is not enough. There can be no do overs with a wedding like there can be with a product shot or portrait session. If the photographer misses a key moment - it's gone forever. I just had a friend of mine tell my completely unpleased she was with the photographs of her daughters wedding. They did not go the crags list round - but they did do it on the cheap. They got exactly what they paid for. People are uneducated about these facts and it is our job as photographers to help assist in their education.

A budget bride can be told to purchase a DSLR and appropriate card that she can give to a family member with a good eye. The member can put the camera on jpeg and shoot. When it is done, she will have the images and a camera thereby meeting her budget with extras. Of course, the shots may not be professional. One can note that most images offered at a price equal to or lower than the price of a prosumer DSLR will not likely be professional either. Thus,. most professionals who offer additional services will most likely not begin at prices below the cost of a prosumer DSLR.
