Adobe today announced the availability of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 beta for Windows and Mac. Adobe Lightroom is the essential photography workflow application allowing photography enthusiasts and professionals to enhance, organize and share photos. The Lightroom 5 beta offers a free, public preview of new features and tools that will be offered in the final release, expected later this year.

Adobe Announces Lightroom 4.4 and Camera Raw 7.4 Final Release

Adobe today announced the availability of Lightroom 4.4 and Camera Raw 7.4 final releases as downloads on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism inside Photoshop CS6. The releases provide bug fixes reported in previous releases, including a correction to the demosaic algorithms for Fujifilm cameras with the X-Trans sensor, such as the Fujifilm X-Pro1 and X-E1. In addition, these releases add raw file support for twenty-five cameras:

To put this idea to the test, we took a handful of different cards and used CrystalDiskMark to test the read and write speeds of the different cards. Tech Table Winner

It’s been rather hectic around here and I forgot to post the winner of the Savage Paper Tech Table. Our lucky winner is Jeff Sipper from Sipper Photography. I’ve known Jeff and Dana for a few years and they are an amazing pair of wedding photographers. Dana is currently pregnant and due in spring. Maybe they will use the new Tech Table as a baby changing table! Congrats to Jeff for being a winner and to both Jeff and Dana on their Sipper Baby 1.0 due out soon!

Camera Dojo in 2013 – Help Wanted

2012 is finally over and what a crazy year it has been. My schedule has been the craziest ever with a full 1/3 of the year spend on the road. I want to especially thank a few people who, without their help, there wouldn’t have been much content or any podcasts this year.

Without Chris, we wouldn’t have been able to record the shows and keep me sane enough to get through some of the shows after horrendous bouts of no sleep and jet lag

A huge thanks goes out to all of the readers and listeners because it is for you that we put in the effort to create content.

So here’s the thing….it appears my schedule is going to be even worse on 2013 and likely a cross-country move will end up happening in a few months as well. The idea of Camera Dojo was to provide a place where other photographers could share their knowledge and experience but I have created well over 99% of the content. If you would like to contribute to Camera Dojo and share your knowledge please read the “Submit an Article” at the top of the page or use the Contact page to get a hold of us. We really look forward to bringing more photographers to help write content and do video tutorials.

The update adds HiDPI support within the Lightroom Library and Develop modules and includes additional raw file format support for 20 new cameras including the Canon EOS 6D, Nikon D5200 and Sony DSC-RX1. Snapseed for Android Now Available

One of the most popular image editing apps for iOS is now available on Android platforms. If you haven’t seen Snapseed, it is most certainly checking out as it includes a bunch of tools to help improve and process your images. With automatic corrects, color correction, B&W processing, Grunge, Focus , Tilt-Shift, Frames and more, you will find almost anything you need to spruce up your pictures. The screenshot shown here is from my Motorola XOOM.

With all of the power included in Snapseed, the most impressive part is the price, its FREE! At this price you just have to check it out. Snapseed is geared for use on tablets and I couldn’t even install it on my Galaxy S III.

Update: Several hours later I returned to the Play Store and was able to install SnapSeed on my Galaxy S III.

MindShift Gear Camera Bags Launched on KickStarter

I learned a long time ago that one of the things you should never scrimp on is your camera bag. If you buy a quality bag it will last you many times longer than a cheap bag, saving you money in the long run. To that end, it is no secret that I have been a huge fan of Think Tank Photo bags over the years. They have always held up extremely well under lots of use and if there ever was a problem, their customer service has been second to none. So it may come as a surprise to many that Mind Shift is a separate camera bag manufacturer but it is being started by the same team as Think Tank Photo.

MXCamera Releases Canon EF Mount Adapter for Sony NEX Cameras

The holy grail of adapters for the Sony NEX series cameras is now available. MXCamera has just released an adapter to allow the Sony NEX cameras to use Canon EF lenses. The big advantage of the MXCamera EF adapter is that it fully supports auto focus, aperture adjustment, and image stabilization.

The new EF Mount Adapter is available immediately from MXCamera’s eBay Store for $289.90.

Nikon 1 V2 Mirrorless Camera Announced

Nikon’s first entry into the mirrorless camera realm has finally got its first round of evolution with the announcement of the new Nikon 1 V2. The new V2 has a beefier handgrip, a new mode dial and an pop-up flash. The Sensor has been upgraded to a super high-speed AF 14.25-megapixel CMOS sensor (up from 10.1 megapixels on the V1) coupled with a new Expeed 3A image processor.

Burst mode now runs up to 15fps with continuous AF. If you switch on the V2′s electronic shutter you can obtain speeds up to 60fps. The V2 features a new hybrid autofocus system which combines 73 phase-detection AF points and 135 contrast-detection AF points which promises faster shooting performance.

Friday Poll Day – Podcast Length

Usually I take Fridays off from writing content but I wanted to do something to make Fridays a little interesting so my goal is to make things a little more interactive with a new survey poll every Friday. To kick it off we will go with the current poll that is running which is about the length of our podcasts. When we started we kept getting told that people simply would not listen to a show if it ran over 20 minutes. However, with the format of the show and the guests we have had, it is simply impossible to do a 20 minute show, in fact, most of the shows run between 60 – 90 minutes long. That’s a long podcast for sure but we feel that the information is well worth it and is often like having one-on-one time with a famous photographer. But we want to know what you think so please take a moment and cast your vote.

Adobe Releases Lightroom 4.2 and Camera RAW 7.2

The Lightroom 4.2 and Camera RAW 7.2 final releases are available. As usual the update to Lightroom addresses bugs and provides additional camera support, this time with 22 new cameras, 11 new cameras for tethered shooting, and 17 bugs listed as being fixed. If you are using Lightroom 4, this is certainly a recommended update.

Eye-Fi Unveils 16GB Wireless Memory Card

As a fan of the Eye-Fi Cards, I have enjoyed their features and abilities to do wireless tethering, the downside has always been the small 8gb storage size. When I am out on the road or checking out some interesting location, I can burn through an 8gb card pretty quickly. The folks at Eye-Fi have listened to those of us wanting more space and have responded with a new Eye-Fi Pro X2 16gb card. What’s really interesting about this announcement is that the new 16gb card will retail for the $99 that the previous card has been priced at while the 8gb card has dropped to $59.99.

Blurity! – How Not To Sell Software

The Holy Grail of image processing is the ability to take blurry images and make them usable. Adobe demoed this technology last year and I expect to see it integrated into Photoshop in the near future. In the meantime there is a piece of software called Blurity! that claims to do the same thing, and the examples on their website are impressive enough. When I found out about this software I made a note to do a review of it. Normally I will contact the manufacturer of the software, discuss the features, talk about how to talk about it, and maybe ask for license key if one is needed to fully demo the software out. Also, if a product fails to live up to expectations or has some problems, I will talk to the manufacturer and provide feedback and then discuss posting a review or waiting for an update to address my concerns. This post is going to go into my experience in learning about and trying out Blurity! and what irritated me enough to write an article about it.

Fall Photo Contest: Water

It may be Fall in some parts of the country but here in southern California we are in the middle of our Summer season and we are doing the best we can to cool off. This made me want to do a contest based on the theme “Water”. You don’t have to be an expert to enter this contest you just need to come up with an image that fits the theme. Canon EOS 6D vs Nikon D600 – Battle of the Budget Full Frames

Yo Kerry, How come we never see any Nikon news on The Dojo? Well..its fairly simple…Nikon doesn’t have me on their press release list and since I don’t shoot with Nikon equipment, I don’t often go scrounging around for news bits. I am a Canon shooter but I am not some religious zealot about Canon, it’s just what I started with and have invested in. That disclaimer aside, The new Canon EOS 6D and Nikon D600 are the newest in full frame sensor cameras from both companies and have a lot in common, even the names are eerily similar. Let’s put these two rookies into the ring and see what the tale of the tape says.

Lensbaby Announces Spark – Low Cost Selective Focus Lens

I am a huge fan of the Lensbaby products and have used them practically since they came out. I even shot an entire wedding using nothing but Lensbaby products. One of the problems has been the price point. The Lensbaby products can seem a little pricey for a lens that you only use for very specific shots. Well, Lensbaby listened and has created Spark. Spark is reminiscent of the original Lensbaby or the newer Muse but features a fixed aperture of f/5.6 and sports a double-glass optic. Coming in at only $80, it’s almost half the cost of the Muse, making it a great starter lens for people who are on the fence about dropping the money on one of the higher end lenses.

Sigma has created a new piece of software ( SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus. The focus limiter is also customizable for Sports lenses. Using a special USB Dock, the user will be able to connect the l ens to their PC, and, using easy-to-operate on-screen controls, fine-tune focus and adjust other parameters to suit their personal preferences.

Canon Announces EOS 6D – Budget Full Frame DSLR

I have never quite understood how some companies decide on product names and often, just as you get it figured out, the company does something that makes you scratch your head. Thus is the case with the new EOS 6D. We where off on a good roll with the 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, but then then 60D was a bastard child of sorts that was more of enhancement of the Rebel line than the x0D line..so then Canon throws out what should have been called the 60D and labels it as the 7D which is a step down from the 5D series. To make things even more confusing, the new EOS 6D logically doesn’t fit between the 5D and 7D, it should probably be called the 4D. The EOS 6D is being labeled as “As 7D with a Full frame sensor” which is quite accurate given the specs since it doesn’t compete against the higher end features of the 5D Mk III and has more of the same features as the 7D.

Besides the full-frame sensor, the 6D is also a step up from the 7D with the integrated WiFi and GPS, 20 megapixel sensor, and newer Digic 5+ processor. One of the more surprising twists is the switch from CF card to SD card storage. I personally am not too bummed about that, SD cards are smaller and less expensive than CF cards and my laptop and desktop machines have built-in SD card readers, so not that big of a deal at this point as I already use SD cards in my Sony NEX 5n and camcorder.

Into Alaska with the Sony NEX 6

The more I see the Sony NEX 6 the more I want it. I really like the Sony NEX 5n but I want the built-in viewfinder, pop-up flash (sometimes you just need a little fill), and the new hot shoe that will work with my manual flash systems as well as new products from Sony. While I may have a serious camera-crush on this new camera, Sony decided to make a video that would likely push many people right over the edge. Sony sent photographers Mike Palmieri and Luca Rossini up to Alaska to put the NEX 6 through its paces. You simply need to watch this video and listen to them talk about the camera.

Canon Updates EOS 7D Firmware to 2.0.3

Just last month Canon released the new EOS 7D Firmware 2.0 and today they have pushed out a little maintenance release. This firmware release doesn’t add any new features but corrects a few issues from the previous release.

Canon EOS 7D Firmware 2.0.3
Firmware version 2.0.3 incorporates the following fixes.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera stops working when the auto power off setting takes effect.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the maximum number of images that can be captured in a burst may be less than the actual number displayed in the viewfinder.
Corrects some errors in the message displayed on the LCD screen when saving RAW images developed in the camera (these errors do not appear in the Japanese and Korean language displays).

Sony Announces NEX 6 Mirrorless Camera

The much anticipated Sony NEX 6 has just been announced and is quite the enhancement over the NEX 5 series and has some very unique features. A new dual dial system on top makes switching between modes and settings a lot easier. the NEX 6 sports a built-in pop-up flash and a built-in viewfinder, so that’s two less accessories to have to deal with. WiFi ability allows for simple image transfers and uploads as well as being able to use a smart phone as a remote viewfinder and shutter release. The 18-50mm lens that came with the NEX 5 series and NEX 7 has been replaced with a new 16-50mm that is only an inch thick. The body is outfitted with a new hybrid autofocus system for faster and more accurate focusing. The most surprising new feature of all is a standard ISO hotshoe. What all we will be able to do with this hotshoe is unknown but since it only has a single pin, it sure makes this camera an oddball for Sony.

Sony NEX 5R Announced

Sony today has announced the new NEX-5R which is somewhat of an evolution of the 5N. What you get in the 5R is the same articulated display found on the F3, improved auto focus, WiFi capabilities, and downloadable applications. While all this would seem to be enough for an increment of the core numbering, I think we are still in for something else to come with the “6″ label on it.
