If you haven’t done a Photowalk before, I certainly encourage you to do them on a regular basis. The goal of a Photowalk is to walk around shooting pictures, pretty tough huh? For me, I try to find interesting shapes, leading lines, and interesting compositions. This weekend I was in Denver on business and I hooked up for dinner with my friend Jason (http://canonblogger.com) and then we busted out our mobile cameras and started walking around downtown Denver right at sunset. Jason pulled out his iPhone 4 and I had my Sony NEX 5n. We are going to do a show soon with a comparison of the photos and see how we did the same general shot but what we did differently and some pros and cons of the camera we were using.

I am spending more time on the road this year than ever before with more time spend in rental cars than my own car and countless hours spent on planes and hotels. To help make my travel a little easier I have come up with a few tips that I think everyone can benefit from even if you only travel once or twice a year.

The main points from this video include:

Sign up with rewards points for your airline, hotel, and rental car. This will get you upgrades and perks, not just reward points.
Carry a power strip with a long cord on it
Noise Canceling Earphones to reduce stress
Melatonin to help maintain sleep cycles

GoCast #21 – Why I bought a Sony NEX 5n

For a long time I have wanted to have a small portable camera to be able to take with me everywhere I go. I never bought a point and shoot because they just felt too limited. Even the Canon G12, as nice as it is, only does 720p video and doesn’t have interchangeable lenses. This has always left me with my larger, bulkier DSLR bodies. I have always traveled a bit but this year is completely insane with trips every other week almost all year-long. I love having a camera with me, but it can get to be quite a pain to lug all my stuff around. With mirrorless cameras becoming more and more popular, the photo quality, video quality, interchangeable lenses, and other features have tempted me for a long time, however, picking one out has been an exercise in frustration.

In this episode Kerry discusses issues with the current state of photography education and why it is in such a mess these days. The main problem is that some instructors, both in certain schools as well as photographer-turned-workshop gurus, often fill people with horrifically unrealistic expectations about what they can hope to accomplish as a photographer. In the US the average income for photographers is $29,000 while the average income in the US is $44,000 putting the average photographer not only well below the US average, but actually below poverty level. I’m not trying to crush any dreams here but I think you need to have very realistic expectations and pick the instructors and classes that are actually teaching you skills and setting you up for success and not just trying to keep their own pockets filled.
