DJI Releases Ronin-M 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer
Getting smooth video is never easy and generally has required fairly expensive gear. DJI has had an option available for a while with the Ronin but it was big, pricey, heavy, and hard to transport, but it could carry some big cameras. For the smaller cameras, the full size Ronin was simply overkill. DJI had come to the table with a “Mini” Ronin, appropriately named Ronin-M. The Ronin-M is suitable for most camera types and configurations up to 8 pounds, the Ronin-M uses brushless motors that work on three axes: one for side-to-side “roll” – keeping the horizon level – one for tilt, and one for pan. The system is computer-controlled and features a tilt range of 105⁰ up / 165⁰ down plus a roll range of ±110⁰. Furthermore, the system boasts a precision of control of ±0.02°, enabling precise camera moves and stability correction against even very fine movements.
With the lighter weight of the Ronin-M, the main stabilizer system can easily be mounted to vehicles, R/C cars, and multirotor copters adding to its versatility.
The Ronin-M can be used in a dual-operator mode over a wireless connection where the camera operator is using a remote control to tilt and pan (and soon focus) the gimbal. The Ronin-M has an SBUS port so it can also be controlled with a third-party remote such as a Futaba radio.
To launch the Ronin-M, DJI had a team put together a short movie that was filmed using the Ronin-M. The film was with the Ronin-M being used handheld, on an R/C car, and in the air on a large copter.
To show the versatility of the Ronin-M and how it was used to create the movie, they have also posted a complete behind-the-scenes video.
If you are looking for a great stabilization system, the Ronin-M might just be the right one for you. At a list price of only $1,399, it competes well with other products on the market, especially considering some of the remote control features that are included standard.
The Ronin-M will be available soon and is currently available as pre-order at Multicopter Warehouse.
