Podcast #119 – Conversation with Vincent Versace

In what is the longest Camera Dojo Podcast ever, we spend the evening with Vincent Versace. During this podcast we discuss how we should be paying attention to the blur in our images more than what is in focus. This out of focus is called Bokeh (pronounced Bow Kay).  Vincent blows our minds by teaching us that many of the things that we have been told and accepted over the years are simply not accurate. Next we go into a discussion of focus and that misconception of how focal length affects depth of field. The reality is that it has no affect on depth of field but the focal length affects the apparent focus is because a smaller object will appear less out of focus where a larger object will appear to more out of focus. Vincent challenges us all to spend a day shooting and only paying attention to what is not in focus and not what is in focus. Next we have a discussion of black and white images and processing.

This description only touches the surface of the conversation as it runs all over the map but is one of the most entertaining and education shows we have ever done.

If you want to follow along during the second half of the show when we discuss some specific images, go to Vincent’s website at http://www.versacephotography.com

Warning: There are a few moments of “adult language” that did not get edited out

Hi, who were the photographers that Vincent mentioned? I could not make out the names.

  • Match Grun says:

    Kerry,
This was a hoot. Vincent had me rolling around laughing while listening to this episode, driving back to Reykjavik. I always enjoy Vincent, either speaking or being interviewed. He always has lots of interesting information to share. Last week I started reading his new book, before coming out to Iceland – returning home tomorrow.

    Kerry,
This is one that I will listen to again to check the images that you guys referenced.

I'm only 1/2 way through this podcast and I feel VERY fortunate to subscribe to Camera Dojo. I've been a listener for some time but this interview with Vincent Versace is one of the most valuable I've heard on any podcast in a while. Vincent's explanations about the importance of the 'quality bokeh' in an image and how I need to pay more attention to my backgrounds is brilliant.

I will need to listen to this interview again and again to better understand the concepts.

Thank you Vincent, Kerry and Chris ..
talk about packing value into an interview!!!! wow
