Podcast #114 – Conversation with Gary Fong
Kerry and Chris start off the show talking about the benefits of cleaning out your computer once in a while with compressed air. In Kerry’s case, his computer’s temperature dropped by over 20 degrees. Kerry uses a monitoring tool called SpeedFan to monitor temperatures and manage fan speeds.
Our special guest this week is Gary Fong. Gary was huge in the wedding photography market but now focuses on creating tools for photographers like the hugely popular Lightsphere. Gary comes onto the show and talks about the hype around so-called “rockstar” photographers and how people have bought into the hype without any substance.
Gary’s latest project is the new book So You Want to be a Rockstar Photographer. Social media has created a myth of the a professional photographer’s life as “Rockstar” glamorous. Web personalities who claim that the ticket to success is to “branding”—heavy on style, light on skill—who seem to spend more time in front of the camera than behind it. This myth is hurting a profession that already faces daunting challenges. It’s harder than ever to forge success as a professional event photographer. That’s why it’s critical to learn the real skills and secrets that will help you succeed. Not the motivational, “Buy a BMW and believe in yourself” stuff, but practical principles that generate business in the real world. “So You Want to Be a Rockstar Photographer” is for professionals, budding pros, and anyone interested in learning more about how to thrive in the real world of event photography. What you may discover is that when you stop trying to be a rockstar, and start focusing on the process of being a thoughtful, client-centered pro, you might become an outstanding success.

Nice subject, but most of the cast is inaudible on Gary's side.
sad!
Kerry/ Thanks for a great site,it must also be said that your recent podcasts and interviews have been exceptional and topically of great interest. The podcast with Gary Fong and Chris was so accurate it was untrue.I enjoy being Uncle Bob but i know i,m Uncle Bob! ; at least for a while longer.
Gary used some kind of VOIP serivce and its quality is too bad for us to hear clearly. Next time do a pre-interview check Kerry.
All of the podcasts are done with Skype and the pre-show conversation sounded great. Its really a shame it had some audio problems during the actual recording.
