Podcast #101 – Getting Started With Your Photography Business

Trying to get started with making a business out of your photography is not an easy task and there are lots of people out there who are willing to take your money to tell you what you need to do to be successful. The problem is, not everyone out there is going to give you good advice nor are some of these experts even qualified to tell you how to be successful if they haven’t even done it themselves. Before dropping any money with anybody for any business training, do your homework and read reviews before dropping money on any workshops. One of the more controversial pieces lately is The Photo System by David Jay. In this “system” David gives ten steps to get started. In this podcast, hosts Kerry Garrison and Chris Diset go through the ten steps and give their own commentary.

Excellent topic guys! There are so many workshops and books out there to "help" photographers make money, not too many to help them become better at getting the images their clients want and need. Lucky for us, we have the "dojo" to keep it real.

Chris is definitely onto something with the album pre-design. I always pre-design for the client. Speeds the process along nicely.

Digital vs. prints is not the face off. In my opinion, It's digital vs. an album. Fifty years from now, on my client's anniversary, I think they'll be more likely to have the album stored some place special, than the digital negatives in a form that will be readable at the time.

Technology is certainly becoming a game changer very quickly and figuring out how to deal with these changes may be a big business differentiator.
