It may be a coincidence, but as the economy went south, the number of workshops went north (a ton of them). No doubt that many of the new workshops are driven by photographers trying to make money any way they can when their business is slow. I think there are a lot of unemployed people thinking about going into photography. If people are going to spend their time and money to go to these workshops, more power to the photographers/workshop gurus for seizing the opportunity.
So many of these workshhops just repeat the same old thing time and time again. David Ziser has repackaged the same stuff he has been saying for years. I went to his seminar last year and I didn't learn a thing. Just the same old blah, blah, blah.
The problem I find is that nobody is really coming up with any new ideas or techniques. Everybody is just restating what everyone else says. If you are new to photography, any of these workshops should be helpful, but if you have been a pro for a few years, nobody is blazing new trails. Better to keep your money in your pocket and take the time and money and go to a movie with your spouse.
