The geographical limit was strongly recommended to me by the legal and business team that helped me plan my workshops (yep, it takes a whole team!), but it's something I'm willing to reconsider. In the future I may do a 50-mile radius from Seattle, as that's where the density of pet photographers are. There are no fewer than 25 professional pet photographers in a small range in Western Washington (not including me), which is the highest number of pet photographers per capita in the entire country. I'm so focused on seeing people become successful and make a full time living at pet photography, that I don't want to start someone out when the feasibility analysis for their business is poor, such as in an oversaturated market where the competition is significantly higher than anywhere else. A good feasibility analysis is *critical* in a new business. New competition makes no difference to me, because I only work with about 5% of dog owners, and the more, and better pet photographers I have out there to refer local people to who can't afford my services the better, but I know it would greatly affect the other businesses in my area (several of whom are my close friends), who also would feel negatively toward me for training a disproportionate number of new photographers that they have to compete against. But like I said, even though I've had solid reasons for doing things in the past, I'm always open to change! :-)

I can see the point about not wanting to train all of your local competition. Although I do not subscribe to that philosophy myself, it is everyone's right to decide how they will run their business. I don't feel that her not wanting to teach people from her area was enough to not want to have her on the show. I just personally felt I wasn't going to judge her on that even though I do not have that same policy myself.

I thought the podcast was good but I was disappointed that you had someone on your show who is so diametrically opposed in theory to sharing with her local community. Cowbelly's website clearly states that she does not allow anyone in her workshops from Western Washington....not just Seattle.....Very disappointing that you picked her as your pet photographer.
