BTW, my $.02 about people who complain about the length of the podcasts are akin to inviting someone over your house for a meal and then having the guest complain that you served too much food.

This one in particular is so valuable because you guys all talk about the key elements of being a pro photographer – leadership, quality, and management, not just the commodities Very well done!
I did hear randomly throughout some clicks and clacks though – almost like a rapid sequence on a keyboard. At first I thought it was just a glitch in the audio compression, but by the end of the show I was saying to myself “what IS that?”. Kind of distracting after a while…
Hy guys, another very interesting show!
It's not only about gear or technique, you can be the best photographer but if you do not know how to relate to your costumers in a simple, friendly and honest way you'll loose business and that's the main goal of every wedding photographer – to do business, not to gain prizes or have the best gear. That will came later when your name is synonimous of professionalism.
Marketing, advertising and public relations are the tools, but as all other “gear” these “things” keep changing, but mouth-to-mouth is still the best and cheap way of advertising. Like in photography, in Marketing there are no one-success formula, you have adapt your business to your market and experiment new ways as you do with your photo gear. Once you understand where to position yourself in the market you'll see it's great fun! Be patient and persistent, the results will come.

That was a great listen about building the client relationships. We recently had a incident with an unhappy client that turned really ugly when she went online exaggerating the whole experience and its turned into lost sales and revenue this year for us.

Can I just say that sometimes David is highly frustrating when he talks so vaguely and during the conversation with Mike Larson, I know he completely spaced out and came back with just compliment after compliment without actually saying anything. Anyway, he mentioned some vendor profiles on facebook but I'll be damned if I can find anything to that effect. Is there a link here? Can you follow up? Thanks!
It is utterly amazing that some people have the chutzpah to (essentially) say (and I'm paraphrasing): “David is a space cadet who adds little to no value on this podcast and I can't follow him, but he said something about Facebook that can help me in my career as a photographer so, Kerry, you go ask your space-cadet buddy what he said and let me know. Thanks!”
Kind of ironic that this type of comment goes on a podcast about building relationships. Just my $.02.
Perhaps if “name” would have use his/her given name, he would have sensored himself a little more and chosen his words with more care.
But let's bring this back to a positive place, what do you say? BTW, I was able to find the PP resource mentioned, it's http://www.shootdotedit.com.
I really enjoyed this Podcast and there is so much truth in it…about the importance of relationships. The other thing that has really stuck out in my mind is the difference between a hobby and a business is that a business makes you money and a hobby costs you money….so true, so true.
I think the podcasts rock and David and Kerry are a great mix because they are different.
Using Apple as an example, Wozniak would have been happy just creating great motherboards but Jobs saw the potential. Wozniak had the genus to create his own architecture and Jobs had the genius of vision. They complimented each other.
My wife and I are pursuing photography as a business later in our lives but we've hired photographers for our own weeding, for family portraits and that has been a boon because everything we've liked and disliked from using photographers has shaped how we deal with our own clients. That is something they don't teach you in college.
It's not the equipment that makes you a professional. It's being professional that makes you a professional.
