		<description>there is a hole in the base that attached to the swivel, there is a small thumbscrew on there to tighten down onto the umbrella shaft. If you tighten it too much you can flatten the umbrella shaft. If you have a hollow shaft, force a pencil  into the shaft to keep it from flattening.</description>

Think of it like a satellite dish, the flash fires into the dish and then is reflected back past the flash. With a Shoot-thru umbrella you point the umbrella at the subject instead of having it reflect back past the flash. We will be having a tutorial on umbrellas soon.</description>
